Did You Know...?

Did you know that Albert Einstein arrived in the United States, as a refugee, from Nazi Germany in 1933? Did you know that President Jimmy Carter signed a bill restoring U.S. citizenship to Confederate President Jefferson Davis in 1978, over 100 years after the Civil War ended and Jefferson Davis had already died? Did you know that work on the Pentagon, which is the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, was completed in 1943? Did you know that Elvis Presley, a rock ‘n roll legend was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in January of 1935. He would have been 81 years old this year. I can’t imagine that. I always picture him as young and vibrant, singing on stage and I have all of his movies. Unfortunately, they are on VHS tapes. I still have VCR but it is not hooked up to my Smart TV. Do you like Elvis music and movies? Picture by Pixabay

Elvis belongs to my youth. When I hear the songs I feel young again. Did you know that a classmate of mine saw Elvis in the German city of Bremerhaven when he came by ship for his military service? :-)

I first heard Elvis on the jukebox in the lunchroom at school. We did not have a TV.

I had an opportunity to see him right here in Richmond, VA. My husband was supposed to get tickets and he forgot to do it and then they were sold out. I was disappointed. My husband actually looked a lot like Elvis when he was younger. I will have to post a couple pictures. Yes, I love to listen to Elvis' music. Like you said, it makes me feel young again too. I sing a couple of his songs at karaoke.

We have a lot of Elvis impersonators here in Virginia. I have gone to see a few of them. Elvis became famous in the 50s and those years were my teenage years.

I remember reading that Albert Einstein's sister used to walk him to kindergarten on a leash. He was a genius, for heaven's sake. There will never be another Elvis. Do you think he is still alive?

@IreneVincent I loved his songs and movies. I know they were low brow but I loved them anyway. I wanted to be sailing away in the wedding canoe, lol.

@IreneVincent No, I did not see the movie. Can you imagine twin Elvises singing away? It would be too much for the world.

All his movies were similar in a lot of ways, but still a lot of FUN to watch. He had a knack for comedy and was never put into a really difficult role, but it is what he always wanted, to do. He wanted to be a great actor, but was never given a GREAT role to play.

@puddleglum Yes, I think you are right about Marilyn Monroe. She was actually a fairly good actress but was only given trivial movies to do. I've seen a few of them.

@IreneVincent With respect to wanting a major serious role, Elvis sounds a little like Marilyn Monroe. I think she wanted more challenging roles than the ones she received. In both cases, I suppose managers and agents were loathe to upset a winning formula, so to speak.

I did not know most of those things. I vaguely recall where Elvis was born though. Back when we had a record player, we had Elvis' "Blue Hawaii" concert (I think that was it). My fave song from that was "An American Trilogy".

It's always FUN to learn new things, I believe. Or to be reminded of things we used to know.

Elvis was just the best, wasn't he? What a shame he couldn't cope with all the hype and fame.

He was a simple country boy who grew up poor and then became famous. Instant FAME is something that many others, like him, can not handle. I can only imagine the whirlwind that they are caught up in. I think about the American Idol show and those young people and what they have to cope with. We don't even know the half of it.
