Earning money from youtube

Who among you here tried having a youtube and earning from it? I started my youtube channel a year ago, and so far, I earned almost $2 only :( It's so hard to maintain a youtube channel though.
Whoever tried and are still youtubers, can you provide tips?

My landlords cousin has a channel and it is doing well for him and making over £1000 per week currently but he spends a long time on it.
It's something to do with rap or hiphop music.
He's only 18 as is looking to sell his channel and go to university.
The thing that makes his channel popular is there is always fresh content on it at least once per week.
Also he engages in the comments section and people like that.

@infatuatedbby he puts in a lot of effort and is in contact with many US rap groups.
From what I understand it is not easy to get to that level.

No, I have not tried youtube for earning money. I only watch movies or clips on youtube.

I've never tried making videos. I don't think it would work well for me.

I have a YouTube channel where I post product reviews, yet it seems like I can't earn anything on it.
