Some good news for a change!

I hadn't realised it was a week since I was last on MyLot and I have a lot to catch up on. This was partly due to real life taking over as it's been a busy week for me. I had an interview for a permanent job where I work as I am currently on a temporary contract. I got the news on Monday morning that I was successful and I start on a permanent basis tomorrow so this week has been a blur of sorting out things for the new job as I have had to do a medical and other things to confirm my employment. I was out celebrating yesterday with a friend although we didn't do anything too exciting and a late lunch meant we didn't have a nice meal out last night like I had planned but had a walk along the maria in Bangor, Co Down instead. I'm just relieved that after 14 months working there on a temporary basis, I finally have somewhere that I can call my home workwise!

Actually I was offered permanent post in many contractual positions, but I refuse to take up the jobs. There is no substantial increase in salary, and yet the jobscope changes so much. I prefer to take on contract jobs, so that I get to pick up new skills and make myself recession proof.

@euphie That is good to hear. I think the banks in my country are different. The government has many laws to protect the banks and the house buyers, so they do not really care about the duration of your job. For one thing, the downpayment is 20%, and we have a national forced contribution program where we pay 20% of our income, and the employer pays 16%. This money is meant for housing, medical, and retirement. Those who need it for full time tertiary study can use it too.

@scheng1 It's very different in the UK then - while we do pay taxes which go towards healthcare and that, it's harder to get on the property ladder as banks don't like lending money unless they are sure you will pay it back.

I have had a few temporary jobs for the ;last few years and just wanted something permanent. It will also be an increase in money and I have a better chance of getting a mortgage as they don't like giving mortgages in the UK without a guaranteed income.

I have great intentions but seem to always find myself distracted, come back and then the cycle repeats.

Congratulations on the permanent position. I am working under a temporary contract also, and am hoping it will turn into something more long term.
