Could anybody explain the role of religion in a person's life?

Many a times i wonder what could be the role of religion in the evolution of human species? Is it good for us or does it polarize us? All other species on this planet do not follow any religion or mythology yet they live in harmony, however we humans always seems to be at conflict with each other particularly on religious grounds.

Actually, animals don't live in harmony;). Re. the role of religion, I don't think one person can come up with an answer for another, nor are all religions the same in essence. Now, the background of your question assumes a certain view which seems to presuppose something, that religion is not true. That may be the wrong place to start with the question, in all fairness, because you would be considering the merit of religion as a use, and ignoring what a religion claims that it might be true.

Yes indeed it is. However the main purpose of any religion in this world should be to sensitize people towards others and not to radicalise them.

Sometimes the conflict is a mask. People will use religion as a excuse when the conflict is really about something else. Greed or to dominate.

Yes i also thinks so. Religion is there to guide us on a path of love, harmony and compassion. No religion in the world teaches hatred and violence. Yet people around the world mostly try to justify their acts (especially when they are destructive to humanity) by associating it with one religion or the other.

I became a Christian many years ago and can honestly say that without the "peace of God that passes all understanding" I would have never retained my sanity through the loss of a precious sister, nephew, two husbands and both parents through the years. Having a personal relationship with the Father God through the sacrifice made by His Son Jesus on the cross, is not 'practicing a religion' but living life fully both now and eternally.

Thank you Wilma for sharing your thoughts on religion. I think this should be the true meaning of religion. It should give us solace and peace of mind during difficult times of our lives. Life could be very cruel at times and in those times religion can give us cushion and comfort so that we don't loose our sanity.

People need something to believe in. Most of all, they need to believe that there is an entity that's looking out for them. The sense of security this imparts, though not so validated, is vital for maintaining the peace of mind.

I totally agree with you Animesh. Religion keeps us sane during difficult times, however some people are using the same religion to radicalise others and make them loose their sanity in the name of God or religion. And these people could be from any religion.
