Anyone with sleep problems has probably heard it all. There are people giving advice everywhere. And they can keep you awake if you listen to enough of them. As someone with sleep problems for many years, I've tried it all. And my problem comes in when I have an appointment early in the morning. That means, if I don't get a good night's sleep, I just can't function. And I can't deal with that. Sunday night, I couldn't sleep. I ended up having to cancel my trip to Walmart Monday morning. I was up and down all night long. Last night, I got into bed around midnight. I needed to be awake and out the door by 8:30am this morning to get groceries. I couldn't sleep. I played with the cat. I tossed and turned. I was hot and then I was cold. Blankets on, Blankets off. I sat up at one point and just looked at the city lights outside my windows. I tried every trick I know to fall asleep. I had even taken a pain pill before going to bed. Those pills always make me sleepy. I wasn't in pain but I was wide awake. "They" say if you can't sleep for about an hour, get up and read or do something else. For me, if I get up, I end up being up for hours. So last night I stayed in bed. Eyes closed. I figured I was getting rest anyway. Eventually I did fall asleep. I was dreaming when my alarm went off. Good thing because my dream was headed in a bad direction. I did my grocery shopping and had some nice chats with the other ladies. It's almost noon now and I'm still wide awake. No problems. So, MY advice is to just stay in bed. Eyes closed. Just decide you're going to stay in bed and rest your mind and body and eventually you do go to sleep. Since I have to do this all over again tonight for an appointment tomorrow morning, we'll see if I can get it to work 2 nights in a row. :) -Claudia-

I find that lowering the lights and staying off the computer about a half and hour before you plan to go to bed, works for me. I read a couple chapters of a book and I usually go right to sleep.

I need to do that more. I'm a little too addicted to the computer and I often can't get off until it's time for bed. I should learn to set my alarm and then go read. Thanks for the reminder! I have to try that and see if I can get a new good habit started!

It's horrible! And I haven't found anyone with a good answer yet.

My problem with doing that is that my tossing and turning means hubby does not rest well. He has to get up at 5 and go to work. On the other hand, if I go sit in the recliner, he "misses" me and does not sleep well. It is a lose lose situation all the way around. A couple of things that help me rest better is to wear loose cotton socks, which I forget to do and to wear some "copper hands" gloves from Wal Mart. I still find I remove them without knowing in the middle of the night, but I have a lot of pain in my hands and arms that I do not consciously notice. It seems if they are warm and comfy and my feet are warm and comfy, the quality of rest I get is much better.

I had those problems when Britt was alive, so I do understand. He would come looking for me if I got up, and then I'd feel guilty. Seems that you've figured out something about your own body that helps you. And that's something we all need to work on. Because there isn't a "one size fits all" for a good night's sleep, that's for sure. xoxo

It wasn't that many years ago that I could fall into bed and almost immediately go to sleep. My husband used to comment on that all the time. But I guess so much has happened in my life in the last few years that everything has been destroyed and it will take some time to get some manner of peace back again.

This is what I do, if I get up I know that I will stay up for hours and hours. I keep my eyes closed and try to empty my mind, it's the only thing that works for me.

Yep. I have to keep convincing myself to stay in bed but it's good because then, all of a sudden, it's morning and I know I've slept. And if I can keep that up long enough, I'll have another good habit started. I just have to keep working at it and not give in.

I can do no TV, no cell phone. Computer is difficult. Reading is difficult. I've heard that reading a real book (nothing electronic) is good before bed. I'm going to start trying that.

If you clear your mind and relax, that should work.

And there's the problem. I haven't figured out how to really relax yet. My brain almost never shuts off. So even while I'm laying in bed in the dark, my brain is figuring out how to solve problems I've been working on, or what I need to do tomorrow, or what appointments I need to make in the coming days, etc.

I have restless legs, so even if I sleep, it is a very disturbed sleep and have a hard time in the day to function properly.

I also have restless legs. And my cat loves sleeping on my legs which drives me crazy. But we're working on that, too. :)

Usually when I have nights like that I need a nap the following afternoon. I do try to stay in bed and relax even if I have trouble falling asleep.

If, and I say if, I can't fall asleep, I write a book in my mind. I've never gotten to the end. Sweet dreams!

My Mum used to recite poetry to get to sleep. I revisit happy times in my life and often go to sleep before I get very far into the memory.
