Borderline Personality Disorder and Treatment

I'm still dealing with getting the definite diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). I first heard those words at age 14, when I was first diagnosed. No one really explained it to me except to throw the giant DSM-IV at me. That's the bible of psychiatric diagnosis and it made no sense to me. All I came to learn was: 1) It meant I was a bad person, 2) It meant everything I did was to manipulate people, 3)It meant I caused problems. You can only imagine my relief when I found out it actually couldn't be diagnosed before 18 years old, after spending a year being verbally abused by a psychologist with that being used as an excuse. It came back up about 4 years ago, after I'd left a residential treatment program AMA. The doctor who ran the program proclaimed I had BPD and that is why the program hadn't worked for me. Actually it had more to do with patients being treated like 12 year olds, but that is beside the point. It wasn't long after I brought up the word that my therapist started using the word manipulative when describing me. Within a couple months it had gotten so bad I had to stop therapy with that therapist. Its been nothing but trouble with health professionals when those words come up, so when I was re-diagnosed a few months ago – I was extremely upset. I was ready for my 3 year working relationship with my therapist to fall apart, I was ready for the psychiatrist who gave the diagnosis to refuse to work with me. I was ready for another disaster as far as getting mental health treatment.. I was shocked – both of them didn't flinch. My therapy has continued on as it was before. I'm shocked to have finally found treatment providers who haven't run away or turned mean at hearing the diagnosis of BPD. They realize I'm a person, not some monster who lives to make their lives miserable. Its sad I've had to wait over 15 years to experience this.

It seems that you have come across some very mean people in the field. Not all doctors know all and not all doctors are nice. My eldest daughter has a BPD. That makes her difficult, specially when she decides to stop taking her meds. Still she is a loveble person and quite succesful at her job and as a mother.

@Lolaze Everyone should be treated like a human being. specially people who are frail because of their ailments. It is not their fault.

@marguicha I'm a hot mess if I'm off my meds. I finally now have doctors who treat me like a human being even though I have BPD, it helps a lot.

Don't and never lose hope! Being diagnosed with BPD isn't the end of the world ..... I hope. If it helps, you aren't alone because I suffer from BPD too. I totally understand what you mean when you say that you're a mess without your medications. I'm glad to hear that you now have a treatment plan, and humane doctors that you can work with. Continue working on it and all the best! Recovery is near! :)
