My little girl counted from 1 to 30, and more

I was quite surprise just now when I heard my little girl counted from 1 to 30, and still continued counting. We didn't teach her to count at all. My son said, she already knew how to count even up to 100, perhaps she has been hearing him counting always. I always do not want to teach my children any academic subjects until they are older, unless they learn on their own. I think the kids always learn better and happier if they are not forced to. I am always amazed of how kids learn and do things. Just now my little girl started counting because she told me to go with her once she counted to zero, but she started to count from 1, and she never reached zero.

Younger children seem to pick up a lot of academic stuff from their older siblings.

Yes, that's why sometimes even though I don't want to teach my younger yet, she has already learned from the elder brother. Moreover, my elder son always likes to teach her something.

@JudyEv I don't know, but he likes a lot of things as well. I guess kids are just exploring their interests. I like teaching since I was young as well, and I am glad now I have the chance to teach my children, though I have not been a teacher.

Yes, I think especially for young children, it'd be good to just teach them by telling stories, singing songs, playing games, they will surely learn faster.

@salonga That might not be true, but thanks for the compliment anyway. I always think all kids are smart, especially if adults do not disturb them from learning.

Thanks. Actually I think many kids can count, especially those who go to preschool. I just always find surprises from my children, as I didn't teach them but they picked up on their own.

@kaka135 They must be inherently bright because their parents are bright.

Learning can be fun. It is finding how a child learns best and giving them that opportunity that they can really surprise us.

Yes, I always think it's good to teach according to the children's temperament and interest, and I believe learning is fun! There will be a few more years for me to explore how my little girl would like to learn, as I want to start the formal learning when she turns 7.

She is almost 4. I was just surprised that she managed to count as I didn't teach her before, and she doesn't go to school too.

@kaka135 Children are very smart nowadays. My friends daughter could speak English fluently without going to school and it's not even our native language. She learned that from watching tv. Until now she only speaks that language.

That is very smart of her to learn to count on her own from listening to her brother hehe.

I think almost all the kids can do that. Kids learn really fast by imitating. So, as parents or caretakers, we really need to be mindful of our words and actions, because you won't be surprise to hear how the child talk like you (including the tone or posture).

@kaka135 Oh yes, hehe. It is important to refrain from saying bad words or something you do not want the kids to say because they like to mock, imitate, copy actions.

Children always bring us surprise and happiness. Your little girl reminds me of my son when he was little. We felt joyful when he had some improvements suddenly.

Yes, it's always joyful to be with the children, though there are also challenging moments! I am sure both of us enjoy our motherhood very much. I am very easy to be pleased by little tiny things.

Parents are always get some pleasant surprises by small children. I understand your happiness and joy when sharing this with us. I remember once incident, when my elder son started play schooling and one day he talked in one complete sentence in English language. Since then he only knew English words on different things and was never able to speak sentences. Have a wonderful time with your children

Yes, I understand that as well. I haven't really formally taught my elder son English yet, but I am quite surprise he can read and understand quite a number of English words. Sometimes he tries to speak English to me too.

they are like sponges, listening, watching, remembering, mimicking and there are multiple sources now, not just parents and teachers

Yes, I agree with you. That's why I am actually quite protective as they are still young, I'd prefer them to be in a healthy environment now. Children see, children do.

I remember that my younger brother learned a lot from me, I went to school two years before him. When he started he already knew to write and to count.

I guess when the siblings are very closed, the younger tends to learn a lot from the elder. I can see my little girl learn a lot from the elder brother, as they are always playing together.

Thanks. Yes, I think kids learn faster when they see how others are doing. They like to imitate. My children's memory is definitely better than mine.

She is going to be 4 years old soon. It might be quite normal for those who attend kindergarten to count or spell, but I have never taught my little girl counting, so I was quite surprise.

Since she's not going to kindergarten, I do not worry that she will not be able to pick up soon. I like how the children learn things on their own.
