This tradition is followed in India, where there is A MANGALIKA DOSHA IN THE BIRTHCHART OF A Bride. If this Dosha is noticed in the birth chart of a bride her marriage will be performed with a Peepal or Banian or even the idol of the Hindu God Vishu Tree before the actual wedding. After the marriage the tree will be destroyed. This tradition is known as KUMBH vivah. This ritual or tradition is performed to break the Curse over the bride and Groom.

One way to avoid a mother-in-law - marry a tree.

Oh. India really are one of the countries that have an interesting tradition. Even your marriage ritual have much ceremony and i am always fascinated by it. One of my close friend is from there and she just recently got married. Maybe her birthchart is okay coz she never mentioned marrying a tree. :)

Every individual has their own belief.
