Getting Food From My Own Garden

I've finally developed a green thumb. Lately I've had some financial troubles which made me rethink the way I live my life. I could no longer afford to go out and eat just anywhere. Plus, all that fast food was seriously damaging my health. So I started making a garden. It's been a couple of months now and I've had a couple of really good harvests from my garden. I started out with potatoes. They seemed to be the easiest to plant. Plus, I watched the martian so there was some inspiration there... I waited a couple of weeks and voila! I had some potatoes to harvest! Man, eating those potatoes gave me some satisfaction knowing I started them out on my kitchen counter slicing them and placing them on wet tissue paper to start. I've also planted some lettuce, cabbage, carrots, beans and I am currently waiting for the upo and ampalaya to reach maturity. Onions and garlic seem to be pretty easy to grow too. I also have some lemons in my backyard. So, I guess, making the decision to move to a house with a bigger backyard has paid off in the end. I've cut down my spending to almost half just for food alone and I feel healthier eating organic food grown from my own garden. Have you considered getting food from your own garden too?

Potatoes only took 2 weeks? They must be some fast growing sort! It must be satisfying to eat your own produce - I only grow flowers.

Not two weeks, a couple of weeks. About two months and a half.

well, it's green. I don't really have flowers in my garden. They're mostly just vegetables. SO I have varying shades of green.

@MGjhaud well, the only thing you'll see are the tops so they're still green. the colorful stuff lies underneath the ground. they're only colorful when I harvest them :D

I have considered it! As a matter of fact I own a property where I can do that. The problem is that my place there is far away from civilization. I can only use it for camping two or three days. When I have my own car, I will be thinking on starting my own vegetable garden.

I live in an apartment and have no garden of my own but when I was young my father had an allotment and we grew most of our own fruit and vegetables. This was useful because we were still in a time when some food stuff was on rations.

have you considered coming up with a "container garden"?
