How Much For My Weathervane?

Yesterday as I was mowing my lawn and rather enjoying myself, crazy I know, a man came into my yard. I turned off the mower and asked him if I could help him. He wanted to know if I would sell my weathervane to him for 300 dollars. This isn't the first time I have been offered money for my weathervane. When we bought this house 14 years ago the weathervane was on top of the barn, but it looked old and very rusty. I am pretty sure this weathervane was home made and there was no way I was parting with it. Many years ago my husband took it down and it took 3 of us to do it as it's extremely heavy. He painted it and then we put it back up. He took it down again this past summer for touch ups on some of the paint. I maybe should have taken the 300 dollars but how many nicely made weathervanes are even out there. My husband and I decided long ago that we would never sell our weathervane. So there it is gracing our barn and we are very happy to have it.

I'd be making some and selling them one at a time. Sounds easy money to me.

Your weather vane looks nice. It's not usual to see a weathervane here.

We are keeping it, it's so weird people stop and offer us money for it. This is the 2nd time this has happened.

Vintage weathervanes are highly collectible. The American Pickers guys buy them.

Those picker guys would have to offer big big money for me to take it off my barn roof.

That is quite a nice weathervane. I cannot blame you for holding on to it, as it has watched over your memories for the last fourteen years.

We do love it and my husband painted it in such bright colors. That guy wants it he will have to considerably up his price.

If someone offered $300 it is probably worth $1000. I am glad you decided to keep it, it is great looking.

@BelleStarr you are probably right, guess he will have to make money on someone elses stuff, not mine.

I love it too, but wouldn't be so bold as to stop and ask if its for sale. I'd rather enjoy its beauty in its current location. I would think that a weathervane such as yours would easily fetch a lot more then what he offered.

I think so too and he probably thought I would jump at his offer. It would have to be considerably more than that to get me to sell.

@KuznVinny We don't want to sell it and don't need the money anyway. So on the barn it remains.

@fishtiger58 While I'm not so sure it's worth more, it could be. Generally, though, people are willing to pay more than an item is actually worth if they are truly intrigued by it.

It is lovely! I always wanted a weathervane, but our house is too tall for one.

That's a nice weather vane. Did you paint it the way it is now, or was it painted like that and you only renewed the color?

@fishtiger58 I think it's pretty good looking. Most weather vanes I've seen are all black. No wonder people want to buy it from you.

No the paint was gone and it was rusty when we bought this house. My hubby painted it that way. Not sure what it originally looked like.

@just4him I don't know what the original paint looked like or if it even had paint on it, but we like what we did with it and that's how it will stay, pretty and safe and sound on our barn roof.

Wow well that was a very generous amount of money. Imagine if you had done all the work to take it down and then he decided he didn't want it after all. It is a very nice weather vane. It looks like something you would see a top of barn.

The first number that came to my mind as soon as I saw it was 300.00. It looks to me to be from the 1950s. It could be worth 600 to the right person if you know where and how to sell it. Nice paint job. I wouldn't sell it though unless you really need the money. I found the policemen in my profile pic in an old school. He's 6' tall and two sided tin. Excellent condition and even has his original base. He's priceless to me. I found him in the very back of the basement. My light kept going out but I found my way to him and dragged him out.

We won't be selling it, but it's interesting to see how much some people would pay for it. Cool policeman.

It looks antique. I think I've read about a market for that sort of thing a few weeks ago. Usually, if they're willing to offer as much as $300, it's worth a lot more. But you're right not to sell it because it definitely adds to the charm of the house. If I live in the states, I'd choose to live in Victorian style home and I'd definitely want a weather vane on my rooftop.

For me, it would depend in part on how difficult it is to take down. It's not a bad-looking item. But for $300.00, well...

It seems to be harder to take down then put up, but that's my hubby's deal. It will stay on the barn roof. We have no intention of selling it.
