Early Start To My Day

United States
April 28, 2016 7:34am CST
I'm up extra early this morning as I have to take my mom for blood work and then a doctors appointment. Days like this require a double dose of caffeine so I'm having my first cup of coffee in an extra large mug. Taking a 94 yr old out for appointments is exhausting and requires both my daughter and myself to accomplish this. Right now I'm sitting here enjoying the quiet before the day gets crazy. How's your day going?

I know very well what it is like taking a 94 year old out but I have to say at 94 my mom was still pretty amazing. She was 96 before she started to go down hill.

@Marilynda1225 You would think with an elderly person they would be more considerate but doctors are often more about seeing lots of patients these days than giving good service in a timely manner.

Our morning was exhausting and they made us wait forever before the doctor was able to see her. Since she needed blood work done she wasn't able to eat anything and I thought it completely unfair that they took so long to see her. I swear we were in the waiting room for an hour after the blood work and I was tempted to leave.

I hope you get your appointments accomplished without too much stress. Is your mom able to walk?

@Marilynda1225 I understand. My husband can walk short distances, but when we go out I push him in his wheelchair.

@jaboUK I probably should consider a wheelchair but I'm afraid that my mom will expect it all the time and give up walking altogether. I'm trying to keep her mobile as long as possible

My mom shuffles but needs a walker and only takes tiny baby steps. It's hard getting her in and out of the car and down the stairs from the house. Thankfully the doctor office is a walk-in with no stairs

My first full time job was as an activity director, and part of my duties were accompanying the residents, whose families couldn't do it, to their appointments. I learned that thru waiting times I could really learn a lot about the life of the resident, and I loved that aspect of the job. Alone one-on-one time was something I didn't get enough of. Of course for you, its a huge undertaking. I hope that you all made out all right.

It's sad when doctors let the elderly sit and wait for so long when they have an appointment. It was ridiculous how long we had to sit in the waiting room before the doctor was ready and we were the only ones there.

@Marilynda1225 I agree with you, and I can remember feeling mad about that on many occasions. The resident that I would have with me would be totally oblivious to the wait time, they just knew that they were out somewhere different (usually) and because of that I learned to enjoy their company during those waits. Our society has it all backwards, we should be honouring and going out of way to accommodate our seniors, afterall, they gave us the society and the world that we enjoy.

I hope the caffeine worked, also my mom is 94 (almost 95), I know how hard it is to take her out for appointments.

@Marilynda1225 My Mom has an open ulcer on her left leg, so we have to be very careful when we bring her out.

It's extremely frustrating since my mom needs a walker and it's hard to maneuver her in and out of the car. But we are done now for the month and don't have to do it again for a few weeks.

@Marilynda1225 And even then you'd have to get your Mum settled. Here's a hug.

The girl that does the blood work here is amazing. I have trouble when I need blood work but she manages to get it done without any hassle and I never have a black & blue the next day.

I am so glad you still have her at 94, that is fantastic. She must take very good care of herself and you of her. Great job

I just plugged in the vacuum, someone's got to do it so I guess I'm the lucky pusher of the noisy machine.... Going out to an event tonight, a fashion show (charity) looking forward to it!

I really exhausting one. I did the laundry, went to mom's restaurant to help out. Then I had to do some online work up until late in the evening.
