A friend of mine whose father is looking for work applied for a job and was granted an interview but then was told he should come back when he has lost some weight. Another person I know when filling out an application was asked if that person smoked, guess what happened they do not hire smokers. From what I understand this is going on more and more in companies because of their hospital insurance. For instance one thing being said is: obese people need some kind of motivation to be healthier-they cost all of us money with their diabetes and heart disease as do smokers. In some States this is legal in others it is not.

I never heard of that being legal, but maybe it is. I am against that kind of policy if it is legal. I do not think employees should be able to discriminate like that.

@slund2041 It seems that the insurance companies are really beginning to get sticky on that type of thing and if someone wants to work there they need to be in the best of health. Yes it is legal in some States as I mentioned above.

I think this is an evident of having discrimination. I agree that some companies have such preferences. But I think it is not proper.

@Shavkat Some companies do have such preferences but I think it is the Insurance companies that have started all this because of the high cost of medical care.

When I taught, there was no smoking at all on school grounds. Programs were offered by our health insurance company for quitting smoking, losing weight, getting fit, etc. it does cost companies and taxpayers lots of money. Jobs are hard to come by, so I think companies can be picky. I don't believe it's legal here.

@Marcyaz No that won't happen. We have the European courts to protect our workers rights. Your employment law is from the Stone Age. People can lose their job with no notice, no pay off and no come-back. It's terrible.

@Marcyaz I'd never get a job. I have what the doctors have termed morbid obesity. I'm very happy I'm now losing weight and people are starting to notice. It isn't a lot, but it's 15 pounds so far.

I thought that discrimination of that kind was illegal everywhere. Guess I was wrong. And that's why so many people can't afford food anymore. :(

Uh... I don't know what to say to that. At this rate one day people who are ugly according to them will not get any jobs either. Since "personality development" is important for companies. Totally dubious to say the least.

What these insurance companies will not do. You pay them so it's not like they are paying out and not getting nothing in return and half of them refuse to pay for certain medicines you are prescribed. It is a shame when you pay them but they can tell you not to be fat or smoke. The companies that are turning these people away must not want to hire no one to bad. Just because someone is overweight or smokes does not mean they may not be a one in a million employee whom actually works their tail off.

Health needs to be taught more in school than it is, stressing not only the health problems but about being social and accepted by friends and the ability to get a job. I imagine it is not legal to not hire in some places but it would be hard to prove you didn't get the job because of health.

@Marcyaz I mean at the end of the end, if someone is a great worker and is really keen of the job, I reckon what they do in their personal life or how they look shouldn't matter.
