Had I Known . . .

Yesterday morning , I went to the hospital so the results of my quarterly laboratory exams can be seen and interpreted by the doctor . The lab exams was done last Saturday , April 30 . I was surprised though yesterday when I saw that my cholesterol was high and it was the highest I had so far . And to think , that last Sunday , when I attended the Alumni Homecoming , we ate lechon and I ate some of its crispy skin, though in moderation . Then at dinner , we had pockcheta and shrimps too . I felt afraid , because had I known that my cholesterol is high I shouldn’t have eaten those. Imagine , if ever I really ate so much of them , I could have had a heart attack . Good thing I ate them in moderation . So the doctor gave me a medication , atorvastatin, for one month . Time to exercise too again , because for the past weekends I wasn’t exercising at all . But , I seldom eat meat anymore , always fish and veggies . Sad , but as we grow older , we should really be mindful of our food intake and have to have exercise always . So young people , as early as now , be mindful of not eating too much of those fatty foods .

Good thing you had that lab. exam. so now you'll know what foods to avoid. It is good your sugar level is normal too. My problem is the uric acid which is one point higher than normal, so I can not eat beans, and those food high uric acid. But I love fish sauce, tuna, and dried fish(tuyo) which are all high in uric acid. When we grow old it seems,we could not eat but veggies and fruits! ha ha ha!

It's part of my quarterly monitoring of those because sometimes my cholesterol would be higher than normal but this one is so much higher . Yes, when the uric acid is a bit high , beans is prohibited and so are those from internal organs of pork etc. And i think even sardines . I am glad though that my uric acid is always on the normal and to think i am fond of bagoong . When we are getting old the unhealthy foods that accumulated in our stomach are now giving us problems .

I don't eat food with high cholesterol very often but I am not that conscious of what i eat. My cousin who is a cardiologist told me that I should not stop my long ride (mountain bike/road bike) as it does help me make my heart healthier.

@SIMPLYD actually no. Running is a no no because too dangerous for the heart. Walking is a yes. Staying away from smoking and high cholesterol food is a yes.

@toniganzon Oh , is that so ? Well, i think vigorous physical activities or exercise everyday can also be a big help to prevent us from getting a fatal heart attack.

Don't feel bad. Sometimes our bodies just produce cholesterol. I hope diet and exercise can help you, but the meds will. I'm on Crestor now.

Glad that you have your medical report to warn you of the health risk. Some people refuse to go for medical checkup, and they do not want to cut down on rich food. In the end, they will suffer.

@SIMPLYD The problem with high cholesterol is that there is no symptom. That is why many people do not know about it, and they do not want to go and do a medical checkup.

Actually , with the medication and lots of exercise and some restraint in eating fatty foods , i can make it lower in a month . It would happen every now and then , my cholesterol goes up and that's what i do . After a month taking the meds , lipid profile shows a normal level already . And i can also do that , eat no rice but instead camote or apple . But i don't anymore because i become thin and i don't like how i look when i am thin .

my cholesterol levels are within normal, only the PTPA is either high or low. take good care of your health my lady. exercise helps and so does our dietary regimen. if you ate in moderation, then your cholesterol levels might already been a bit high than normal, that is why your results on LDL and cholesterol were 2 points high. do you drink pineapple juice?

@ridingbet I do believe that even if we are already medicating , we should still be cautious in eating foods that can affect what we are medicating . And that's what some people always violates .

@SIMPLYD that is a hundred percent true. that is why we have the CHEAT DAY, but in this day where we cheat, we take excess foods too, and that is so wrong. do you have a cheat day?

God shouldn't make this demand on us oldies, we should be able to relax and eat as much as we could after all the trouble we went through in our youth...

Yes, it should be that indeed. But I guess it's His one way of reminding us to eat moderately even if we are so much younger. Being healthy starts from the amount of foods we consume as we are growing.

Yes, i know . My doctor would ask me if i can exercise at least 30 minutes a day . But i told her i am already too tired when i arrive home from work so i can't do it . Thus , she gives me medication . I always eat fish and take fish oil . Though , sometimes it's inevitable that i eat some fatty foods because they are usually the ones cooked by our food supplier at the office .

In the states, the cholesterol levels used are different from where you are @SIMPLYD . Our levels are 70-135 as the normal range. Mine has always been 118 UNTIL I went to the doctor in March when he stated it was now 145. I almost crapped my pants. Because of my financial situation, I had been eating a lot of macaroni & cheese and other crappy foods. I have completely changed my food intake. I am eating more oatmeal, nuts, cranberries, and make sure to read the labels on food products that show cholesterol levels in them.
