no i know that bitcoin is used for things on the deep dark web so I would avoid using it at all

You may as well avoid use of gift cards, credit cards, debit cards, Paypal, etc. because they are all used daily by criminals who access the "regular" internet. You need not go to the "deep dark web" to use bitcoins.
The "deep dark web" is not accessed by only criminals. It is also used as a safe place for activists to voice their opinion in places where they would other wise be persecuted for doing so, by government, businesses, the military, the police, etc.. There is more info here:
