What Is A Good Age For a Girl To Start Wearing Makeup?

United States

I just saw an elementary age child with makeup. I'm talking eye shadow, mascara, and lip gloss. I believe to each their own, but I think it's kinda young. When did you start wearing makeup? I didn't start until my senior year of high school or the year after. I think it was just lipstick that I wore. My parents weren't strict about it, I just wasn't interested. What's your makeup story?

I didn't start wearing lipstick and eye liner until I was in college! (hahaha, just kidding)!!!! My daughter is 16, and she hasn't really started wearing makeup yet, unless it's some special or formal occasion. She is like you, she just has no real interest in it. Fortunately, she was blessed with natural beauty, so she could probably get away with never wearing makeup and still look beautiful. I would think that around 13-14 would be a good time for girls to start getting interested in makeup, but I guess it just depends on the girl. Girls are very self-conscious at that age, so if wearing a little makeup helps give them a confidence boost, then more power to them. I just don't like the ones who cake it on so thick. To me, that's very unattractive. By the way, I lost a bet once in college, and had to dress up like a girl...dress, high heels, makeup and all! It was quite a site to see! lol

Okay, @moffittjc, why don't you show us that picture, then? If you were a sight to see, I wanna see the sight! I wondered how you were going to relate to wearing make-up, but wasn't willing to make any bets on it! Sorry, I never "played dress-up" so I can't show off any pics like that! (BTW, I totally believe you only did that since you lost a bet in college! )

@DaddyEvil Thank goodness I lost that bet back in the days before everyone had smartphones to take pictures with! I absolutely refused to let anyone take my picture. It was humiliating enough having to go out in public dressed up like a woman! But I made the most of it and had fun with it! But I have a whole new respect for women who can where high heels all day long!

the very first cosmetic i used was a pressed powder with a light blue casing (which is my favorite color) it was in high school when my mom bought it for me. i'll probably get her a lipstick or something for mothers day.

I started wearing makeup but not on a daily basis as young as 8 years old. That's because I was a young majorette then and I joined some kids beauty pageant. every year my mom made me join this parade that required children to wear makeup too. But it was always done by a professional. But I started wearing makeup on my own when I was in my late 20s. Never wore any makeup when I was a student.

oh ew. Sorry but wearing make up at that age? I personally do not like that! It makes me feel sick to the stomach to be honest! It reminds me of those stupid child beauty pageants. Children do not need or should be advised to wear it. It's like saying "You will look better this way." No no no be the natural beauty you were born to be! I wouldn't know what a suitable age would be. 16? Maybe 13. Teen years. Any age except a child!

@VivaLaDani13 No child of mine is going to wear any sort of make until they are adults unless school extracurricular activities required it like school plays, dances etc....

I wanted to wear some make up when I was in high school, but my mother wouldn´t let me. When I was in colleghe, I wasn´t interested anymore. I don´t wear anything but a little lip gloss when I go out. And, a good perfume.

I love lip gloss. I wear makeup now during the week, but for years I didn't wear any. My mother was the opposite of yours. She would tell me I needed some makeup, but I didn't like the feel of it.

Hmmm... Well, I'm 52 right now and I think I may start wearing make-up when someone pays me enough to make it worth my while... That hasn't happened yet, but you never know, right? My daughter is 28 now and only rarely wears make-up. She never was too interested in it while in school, but I bought her a complete case of different types of make-up when she was 14. She played with it a little bit and never really bothered with it.

That is pathetic, unless she was going or coming from a performance. My granddaughter has to wear a bit of makeup when she is ice skating competitions, tap dance recitals, and last fall when she performed in Peter Pan off Broadway. I began in my junior year of high school with a little lipstick and eyes shadow. It was the thing in my day.

I was experimenting with makeup beginning when I was around 12. But I wasn't really able to wear makeup out of the house until I was maybe 15. By the time I went to my first school dance in 8th grade, I was wearing some blush, some lipstick and maybe a little eye shadow. The rest came as I got older.

A make-up kit for an ele3mentary pupil is not a good gift to give. The make-up should be only for young girls who are age 15 or more.

I never wear make-up, because my face is sensitive to cosmetics and prone to greasy. What a pity...
