My neighbour doesn't know me :(

Alright, so I just opened the door today to pick up the news paper and I see that our opposite flat's door is opened and all I could see was a pair of lips smiling ( no face just someone talking ) I could hear the sweet voice. Now I came back in thinking what have changed. When we were kids, we used to know everyone in the society, people used to interact with each other and now as we grow older, the interaction is just over. Everyone is busy in their own life so much so, that they don't even care if someone famous might be their neighbor. The thought is - Are we really advancing or have lost a lot of ethics :/

Quite a difficult question to answer. I, myself, am guilty of not knowing my neighbours but I know when I'm in trouble, they'll be there to help me. I gave one neighbour a ride when I saw her waiting for a public transport, but I didn't even know her name. We had a friendly conversation. We exchange smiles when we see each other on the street. I am not someone who gossips with my neighbour as i dislike talking about other people's lives. But i'm someone who would not refuse a helping hand, when one needs it.

That is what my point was Toni. We know they will always be there to help and and so will we be and still we don't initiate a casual conversation to just know each other better. Why wait for a need to occur instead why dont invite them over for a tea ;) they would love to come m sure. It used to happen in 90's I guess.

@sonesh1 Yeah it does, the problem is I am hardly home anyway. And so are my neighbours. The moment we all arrive home we're all exhausted. On weekends I'm not home either, I go to my parents' place.

People are so busy these days that they tend to ignore some people around them; they are focused on their works or activities.

I do think a lot has been lost in todays society. When I was growing up we all knew each other in the neighborhood but now it doesn't seem to be that way to much. We have met our one neighbor up on the hill and we have met a few people from in town that way their dog out this way.

@sonesh1 It is affecting society in a negative way I believe as you used to be able to call on your neighbors now not knowing your neighbors who could you call.

True that and I totally agree with your point. It all seem like talk of past and I also feel it's somewhere affects the society in a bad way.

@Marcyaz Absolutely what I wanted to convey with this post.. I really think one should step up and just break the ice so that one just opens up :)

Not really..only that maybe we are too busy making everything fast for us that we missed other things along the way. Some would say take it easy, enjoy everyday of your life and you will notice that life is full of wonders.

I think as people get older, they get overwhelmed with personal responsibility which is not the case of children who have everything taken care of by their guardians.

I agree with that. But these are the people we live with. They are always next to us and still we have no clue who they are. Who knows if he/she is your long lost childhood friend ? Until we talk and open a conversation, we never know.

Unfortunate for you then! I live in a very friendly neighbourhood. All my aunties know my favourite food and make it a point to send me some when they make it. We still have picnics small meetups on every occasion like holi diwali new year.Ganpati and Navratri is celebrated together. And we always have a little chat session at night when people come out for evening walks. We used to have tenants once my Aunty still visits me and sends me my favourite sindhi food even after moving out!

when i was living in the city, i didnt know anybody outside my apartment's parameter. but that doesnt bother me though. back here at my mom's place, 90% of the population knows my parents. the closest neighbors we have are my cousins. but i dont really see them everyday, i cant see my neighbors house from my house cause i live in a middle of a farm.

From all the comments it's pretty easy to understand the situation. The word neighbor and neighborhood is long lost and all we have are people around us whom we may know a bit or may not know at all

Same here, i live here 5 years, my neighbours are so private, everyone closes and lock the door as soon as they get into their appartments. I miss the old days when i could just walk to a neighbours house for a chat and coffee

I think global warming is responsible to some extent. When we were kids their were coolers in every house. People used to keep the doors open for air to cross but now houses air conditioning which needs to be kept inside so no more open doors. secondly so much heat and cold ...we don't want our kids to get sick due to that even kidnapping is more now...can't leave kids out of our site
