Would you seek medical assistance online?

I think that online assistance can give a person privacy in case the patient is embarrassed to come out with his / her problem. It can be cost effective too. But I also think that online prescriptions can be cumbersome. Free bait for drug abusers. I came upon one such assistance, AskPracto, which is a new handle at twitter. There are many such advisable / assisting sites available. You can ask questions there and get the suggestions from the (supposed) experts. What are your thoughts on this? (Photo by Pixabay)

When I hear about a disease I know nothing or only little about,I inform myself on the net. But I'd never follow the advice of people I don't know. It's an open secret that the net is full of the weirdest people.

You are so right, there are plenty of so called experts that know nothing of what they propose.

@MALUSE And you can not be sure if they truly are experts as they claim to be. It is worrisome in itself.

Getting a prescription that way isn't legal here in the US, I"m fairly sure. You almost always have to see a doctor. Sometimes if you have a relationship with a doctor, and you need something for a condition you are already being treated for, you can get a prescription over the phone. I do think the internet can be pretty useful for researching a condition though.

@MALUSE Right, I was thinking either to 1) research symptoms to get an idea what you might be dealing with or 2) research a condition after you've been diagnosed to find out more information.

@dawnald Over here, you can get medicines without prescriptions written by doctors. Pharmacists and chemists many times diagnose and give medicines to anyone who ask for it.

After all the doctors here and at Hyderabad refused and told me that surgery is the only way to get rid of my Gall stones. I did read a lot on internet. Even found a couple of doctors in Homeopathy. And These too refused to treat me (prescribe me any medications). So I went to a particular site, which is into selling Homepathy medicines. I found they have a preparation. I contacted them, and they said, I can try at my risk. I have been on their medicines since April 15th and will be on for two months. As I will be doing the Ultrasound sometime later this month when I go to Hyderabad for my Ulcerative Colitis Issue, it would be helpful to find and ascertain if their preparation worked. I would however do not recommend following anything on the Internet (advice specially on health matters) unless you have an idea of what you are getting into. In my case, I have been reading a lot about Ulcerative Colitis, Gall Bladder Stones - so I know more about these

@Daljinder I agree. But then, as in my case, the doctors simply refused to prescribe me anything except surgery and I still do not want any surgery done on me. I had to research, read, prepare notes and find medicines. Definitely I have been into actual diagnosis, reports and consultations, it is just that they do not prescribe me any medication. And I have to survive. That leaves me almost no option. This is why I never consulted them, I only sought out answers to my queries, and if they had anything that I could relate with my research done elsewhere, I accepted their opinion. Decision to go with medications or no, is mine. let me explain - I found this X helpful for gall bladder (on Materia Medica which is considered the Homeopathy Doctors Encyclopedia). I (re)searched about it and confirmed its use. Then I sought out the real medicine. I found some locally here, some in Kolkata too but the combinations were not available. I searched on Internet, found the store. But before buying I did consult the doctors (theirs and other sites) about the composition, dosage etc - and when they confirmed (which matched my research and study), it was a go ahead.

@thesids I think those sites are good for research purposes and to get a general idea about one's condition . But for actual diagnosis and prescription? No way Jose!

I will search different things on the internet and see what they say but I wouldn't use that in place of an actual doctor. Not that I really go to those anyway...

@Daljinder Lol, thank God I don't get sick too often. When I do my husband drags me to the hospital-literally. I am the biggest baby when it comes to doctors.

I'm afraid of inaccuracies. I thought I had something once but my doctor diagnosed it differently. Online advice might not be very reliable?

@Daljinder I would be shocked if the person gave conclusive advice. That rash is ___________. Without seeing it in person? On help desk I found it wasn't easy to diagnose computer issues without sitting in from of the machine. Health issues? Gulp. Yeah you are right. Please submit your payment via credit card or... might be the expert.

@Bluedoll No, it isn't really reliable. First of all, we don't even know whether the expert is actually an expert or not.

I think diagnosis is a science and it can be dangerous to do on ones self unless you have a medical background. Luckily my best friend and my son are both nurses. OI do look at sites like Mayo or Cleveland Clinic which are reputable.

I would rather see a real doctor if I was ill, though I might look up the symptoms online. I certainly wouldn't trust anyone online to tell me what was wrong with me.

I asked one time an on line doctor about arthritis problem of my sister. He only prescribed me medicine and presented the form to order, hehehe what's this? I said. Of course, I stopped. Real or actual doctor is reliable.

@Daljinder I've never spoken to a doctor online before. The most I've ever done to get an idea of what may be wrong with me or someone else, is by Googling. Other than that, I prefer to go see someone in person. Plus, rumour has it that most of those online doctors are just scams. I'm the type who likes to see a person or merchandise ( if I was to buy something ) in person. Not online.
