Continuing on with a look at my ten favorite John Prine songs (and, in a separate discussion set, Steve Goodman songs), this one may shock people as coming so early. This may be one of Prine's best-known songs.
#9: Angel From Montgomery
"I am an old woman named after my mother."
Here Prine wrote the song from the perspective of a woman who has a husband who more or less ignores her. She sits alone after he leaves for work, thinking, "If dreams were lightning and thunder were desire, this old house would've burned down a long time ago."
Bonnie Raitt's version is probably the best-known rendition of this song. It's one of her signature songs. Other acts ranging from Carly Simon to Tanya Tucker to Old Crow Medicine Show have also covered this song over the years. It's a powerhouse testament to Prine's exceptional songwriting.

That's a great song, and I love the choice of location for the video.
