When most of us think about abuse, we tend to think of child abuse or spousal abuse. However, elder abuse is also a very serious problem. When I attended the local Senior Summit with @ElizabethWallace, Elder Abuse was one of the topics discussed by Elizabeth Henderson, a Deputy District Attorney. Part of this involves the scams that I mentioned in my last article. However, Elder Abuse extends much further than scams perpetrated by outsiders. Many of us may have witnessed some of this abuse. If so, we should always contact Adult Protective Services in our area. Types of Elder Abuse: Physical Abuse: This includes slapping and pushing. However, it also includes isolating the victim, restricting their movements, over-medicating them, molestation, and even withholding food or water. Financial Abuse: This includes outright theft, as well as fraud and extortion, such as intimidating or threatening an elderly person to get them to turn over assets. The victim could even be abducted and taken to another state against their will. Mental Abuse: Many elderly people experience verbal harassment, threats or other types of upsetting behavior. Neglect: Sometime the abuse is not a result of the actions of others, but their inaction. This happens when a caregiver does not take care of necessities such as providing adequate food and water, appropriate housing, medical treatment or personal care. In extreme cases, family members may simply abandon an elderly relative. Self-Neglect: This occurs when an elderly person stops taking care of themselves. This is a type of self-abuse and is surprisingly common in lonely, depressed senior citizens. Don't forget that you can make a difference in the lives of others by reporting any signs of abuse, even self-abuse, to Adult Protective Services in your area.

We did that when my mother in law was mistreated at an assistant living house. She had dementia and threw trash can at an employee and the employee had her arrested. The place was suppose to know how to take care of people like her.

I'm sorry you had to go through that with your mother-in-law's assisted living home.

@enlightenedpsych2 - I write a lot of articles about these topics. I suggest other people do the same thing ... and then promote the articles on Twitter and Facebook. That is the best way to get people to take notice of problems.

I think elder abuse is possibly much more common than thought.

@enlightenedpsych2 I was also thinking of elder abuse at the hands of their families too. It doesn't just happen in the nursing homes unfortunately.

@JudyEv - You are so right that elder abuse takes place both in nursing homes and at the hands of their families. It is disgraceful, no matter where it occurs.

@enlightenedpsych2 - The documentaries are a start. People also have to be outraged enough that they are willing to put pressure on their local governments ... city and state ... to regulate these places better.

the young'uns 'n the elderly've both a tough road to hoe :( seems there's always those who'll prey 'pon those who're unable to take'p fer 'emselves. i wish more folks paid mind to such, then took the appropriate actions. i dunno why, but so many tend to turn a blind cheek.

@crazyhorseladycx - Yes, you often hear on the news people saying they wish they had done something sooner. It is so sad ... there are young children and elderly people who are living horrible lives.

I think someone should write the steps necessary to take to protect one's self from financial abuse from our family members and put them in an article or brochure. It should be mailed or emailed to everyone who hits sixty. Time to figure out how to keep other people from taking our money away from us without our permission.

@ElizabethWallace - I agree that everyone should be told how to protect themselves when they turn 60. What I have noticed, however, is how much easier it is for people to become victims as they age. While a 60 year old is still pretty sharp, by age 90 they are lonelier, more vulnerable and more easily tricked. It makes me furious that people take advantage of the elderly.

@DeborahDiane I'm with you. That's why we should figure it out while we still can. Then we will have procedures in place before we need them. I think most people don't really get they one day they will need such protection.

It is sad that some humans have so little compassion for another human. I can't stand abuse in any form to anyone. God help us. Thanks for the information. Have a blessed day

I referred someone to adult protective once. It is a long sad story which I will not go into. They did come out and talk to her and helped her with some difficulties in her life. She told me that someone called and she was glad. I never told her I was the one who called.

It is such a shame to hear about elder abuse happening so frequently, even more so when it is committed by sons and daughters. I know that nursing homes are a hit and miss proposition when choosing and hope that neither Anne nor I ever end up in one.

@JamesHxstatic - If you are in your 70s and have not gotten to know people who are living in assisted living facilities or skilled nursing homes, at least temporarily, then you are very lucky. My husband and I definitely have places we prefer.

I actually have visited friends in several assisted living facilities, and I have friends who have used caregivers. I have picked out ones I prefer, based on my friends' experiences. I would advise other people to think about that when they visit friends who are in skilled nursing homes, assisted living facilities, etc. You never know when you, or someone you love, might need one.

Elderly people i know suffer mostly from neglect either self-neglect or neglect from carers.Nursing homes are under- staffed and no matter how hard they try, they can not manage to care for the elderly as best as they can. I have experienced this but you really always cant blame the care givers

@miniam - You are right that the caregivers often do the best they can. Sometimes it is a family member who causes the abuse. Isn't that terrible?
• Laguna Woods, California

@miniam - Yes, I have read that most elderly people do not tell anyone they are being abused. Sometimes, if the abuser is one of their children or a spouse, they actually protect the abuser. Isn't that sad?

I believe all people need protection from any kinds of abuse. Still, there will be people who are arrogant and are ignorant of these laws. I hope they'd have a strict compliance of such laws in your place. And, I hope that such law will also be applied in our locale

Abuse of the elderly is a wide spread problem. Just like child abuse and spousal abuse. You're right, it does not get the attention it should. The elderly, like children, is a lot of cases, need to be cared for. They cannot do many things on their own. People these days are so desensitized to things that they don't see the elderly as useful anymore. That is just sad. But it is our obligation as the younger people to care for them properly.
