Matt Eddy reports the news on Thursday the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have signed former Houston Astros catcher Erik Kratz, 35, to a minor league contract. Kratz had signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres before the start of the 2016 baseball season. Kratz was traded to the Houston Astros on March 28, 2016 in exchange for right handed pitcher Matt Straily to serve as the backup catcher to Jason Castro during the 2016 baseball season. Kratz was designated for assignment by the Astros on May 16, 2016 before he was released on May 24, 2016 since there was no team in the Major Leagues that needed his services. Kratz will be assigned to play baseball for the Salt Lake City Bees which is the AAA minor league team of the Angels for the time being until he could be called up by the Angels later in the baseball season if his services are needed.

That is a depth move. Soto went on the DL so Bandy was called up from Salt Lake to join Perez. So I guess Kratz is on hand in case of another injury.

Kratz will be working as a backup catcher since he is not the second coming of Johnny Bench as a hitter.
