Does mustard oil and coconut oil prevent grey hair?

May 27, 2016 10:02am CST
In India many people suffer from premature greying of hair. There are many reasons for premature grey hair. It is due to stress, it is due to genetic reasons, also health reasons, many people have grey hair in their 30s. For those reasons many people apply mustard oil or coconut oil. Mustard oil is very expensive in India. So very few people these days use mustard oil. Coconut oil is sold by different companies like Parachut, Shalimar, Nihar and other companies. Some people also apply Arnika Plus hair oil. Unless people take care of their hair, there are more chances of having more grey hair.

Actually, it has nothing to do with stress or health reasons. Hair turns gray because the stem cells at the base of hair follicles die. Since they produce melanocytes, which give hair its color, the hair that grows from those follicles doesn't have any color at all. Applying mustard or coconut oil might do some good for the hair overall, but it's not going to do a thing to help bring color back to gray hair.

Thanks Yuki, the answer was there in your statement itself. For producing melanocytes, the body has to be healthy. The incapability of the body to produce melanocytes is aggravated by high blood pressure, high sugar, and other health infirmities.

@yukimori Thanks Yuki People with diabetes are more likely to have a condition called alopecia areata. With alopecia, the immune system attacks the hair follicles, leading to patches of hair loss on the head and on other parts of the body. Diabetes itself can lead to hair loss. You may also lose hair as a side effect of stress from living with a chronic illness, or from medicines you take to treat your diabetes. Some people with diabetes also have thyroid disease, which can contribute to hair loss. I agree with you Yuki, that diabetes does not directly have relation of failure of cells to produce melanocytes.

Sorry but I don't believe that oils will stop hair going grey.

Not heard of that before. Since my hair has gone its own way, I don't worry about grey!
