I got called in to work at the preschool in Berkeley today. I did some pretend carpentry with one buddy, made a pretend river and mountains in the sandbox with another, and of course I watered the plants with some enthusiastic co-farmers. Here's a picture of the two sunflowers we planted there a week or two ago. One was the droopy one from my balcony. The other is its brother that didn't get as droopy when I neglected them for a day. I think they may have a drip system there in addition to the watering efforts of my young friends. Both seem to be enjoying the dirt and climate of Berkeley. And there are no ground squirrels there. Will they actually yield flowers? I'm not sure. But I have hope for them. I refused to take this pair to be sacrificed to the Squirrel Gods in Concord.

When I lived in CT, I went way back in my yard and planted a row of sunflower seeds along the back fence. And those babies grew taller than me! When they were grown, I would go out there and stand right in front of them, staring up and smiling like a loon! One of the greatest joys of my life. Gardening is amazing!

It really is. Did you harvest some seeds? They can be mighty tasty if you soak them in salt water and then bake 'em up just right.

@CRK109 I don't know that any of the flowers I'm growing this year will get big enough to generate tasty seeds. We shall see!

@TheHorse I love sunflower seeds. I did harvest some from those flowers. I loved everything about having them in my yard.

And the kids will enjoy watching them grow. Good luck. Hope the squirrel gods do not travel this far.

I hope so too. In Oakland, we had more of a problem with slugs and snails. Out here in the boonies, further from the Bay, it seems that larger critters are more of a worry.

They do look bigger than the ones I saw in those little cups. The little roots have space to spread out and I know they will get bigger fast. They look a little weak right now, but I bet not for long. They have forgiven you for your neglect.

Yes, I think they've forgiven me. I may sneak in a little Miracle Gro Quick Start to help them along. The corn in Berkeley is looking good too.

Yes, I would describe them as slender yet turgid. Heh. I hope the stems fatten up and that they continue to grow.

My phone won't open the photo. No high speed Internet right now. It sounds as though they are doing better.

They're doing well so far in their new home. Watering the droopy one actually made it feel better within a few hours when they were still on my balcony.

So far so good. The ones in Concord (Ground Squirrel Gardens) got munched, but some of the corn is still standing. The squash too.

@TheHorse a few weeks won't be that long. Sun flowers grow quite pretty fast.

@TheHorse You'll just have to wait and see. Will you give them any help in the form of a fertiliser?

Did you TELL your buddies you were only pretending to do the work they ask you to do? And I bet you got paid for doing it, too! I think someone should report you! After telling me to put out a good salad dressing where the ground squirrels could reach it here, I am surprised you would be worried about there being any ground squirrels left in California!

@TheHorse I don't agree with that, pony! I DO think you deserve all the love and hugs they give you, though! (Is it okay to be a bit jealous of the love and hugs you get?) (smiling!)

@DaddyEvil That's half the reason I work there. I get hugs and see loving eyes that want me to tell them a story or show them how to play my mandolin. The money is moot.

You know, I think 4-year-olds and Plato are right. Everything is pretend. We don't know anything. I deserve every bit of pretend money they pay me.

Won't the kids be thrilled if they flower? Plants face a lot of challenges in their lives - like most of the rest of us.

They sure do. For some reason, I had really good success with sunflowers in Oakland, just South of Berkeley.

They look like they are coming along nicely. You know sunflowers get very tall. I used to grow a row of sunflowers in my garden every year. The seed are delicious parched, if the birds don't get them first. I love the look of them,so tall and stately.

We had some ten-footers in Oakland. Then ones on my balcony (in a pot) are about 4 feet tall.
