Good idea to ban smoking in city parks?

Starting June 1st, three cities in Lane County, Oregon, where I live, will go smoke-free in city parks. Signs will make it clear that smoking is not allowed, fliers will be available and the city web-site will explain too. The point of the ban is that second hand smoke is unhealthy and quite annoying to non-smokers (like me), and the ban will hopefully show kids in the park that most Oregonians do not smoke. Additionally, wildlife in the park will be protected from smoke and the cigarette butts that litter most parks. Fire hazards will be reduced as well. There will be an education period of three months, then enforcement will begin. City workers or police can order a person to leave the park if they light up and refusal could result in a $500 fine, 30 days in jail, or both. In other Oregon cities, public compliance has been good. Smoking was banned in all state-owned parks in Oregon, including beach parks, in January, 2015 Has your city banned smoking in parks or considered it yet?

As a part-time smoker, I'm kind of resentful of this sort of thing. But I think smokers should use common sense and not smoke when kids are around, not leave their butts lying around, etc.

@LovingMyBabies Glad I'm not alone in this. Some courtesies should be common sense. I hate to see everything regulated by "law."

I'm not a smoker but I resent this type of law. Regulating just a bit too much in my opinion.

@Lolaze Some things should be "regulated" by social convention. People have to make SOME decisions for themselves.

It is banned only near children games in French parks. I am not a smoker today, but I smoked during years, and I find that this smoker hunt is going too far. When I was very young, people were smoking in movie theaters. When I started, it was possible for me to smoke in college libraries or amphitheaters. Now it is forbidden to smoke in bars and offices and they have to go outdoors like lepers. There should be a limit : I do not see what damage they can do to others when smoking in a park justifying to spend a month in jail. To be logical you should also forbid cars in the streets, they are a lot more dangerous for the health.

@TheHorse People can still smoke outdoors if there is an opened terrace. Many cafés in Paris have closed terraces with heaters and strong ventilation which were built for smokers when smoking inside cafés was banned, but the city of Paris has decided last summer to sue all cafés allowing to smoke inside these closed terraces. However, the owner risks only a small fine (about $70 for each smoker found, and the same for the smoker) and they are continuing to allow to smoke inside these terraces. The city seems more tolerant this year, and I have not heard of a new trial since many months.

@topffer Interesting. I'm glad to hear that there's some tolerance toward smokers there.

Can you still smoke outside at a Cafe in France while sipping your coffee, discussing Renoir, and watching people promenade by?

I think banning smoking indoors is fine, but outside is going a little too far. I understand wanting to save the lungs of non-smokers but there is plenty of clean air outside for all. As far as the butts, they could enforce a litter ordinance instead.

@JamesHxstatic Thats when you take 2 steps to the right or left and everything is fine again. I think smokers need to have some rights in this world too. Smoking outside needs to be preserved as one of them.

The air is clean only until you get downwind of a smoker then you get a snoot full.

@JamesHxstatic The law should then give smoking areas in the park.

I think I'll get silly and post signs around my 20 acres that says: "No NON-smokers allowed." That ought to get people scratchin' their heads @crazyhorseladycx .

I don't know how easy that would be to enforce. Here is Spokane a couple of kids beat up a kid in one of the parks and took his shoes. It took several weeks before they caught the kids. So if they can get away with beating up a kid how are they going to catch everyone who smokes in the park?

Goodness gracious. What kind of shoes were they? From the police's perspective, it's probably easier to hassle smokers than thugs. Hassling thugs can make you wind up on trial for murder.

They won't catch everyone, but the ones they do will leave or get cited I suppose.

@TheHorse They were expensive running shoes which the kid only had for a few days. My basic point I was trying to make here is there is no constant police force in most city parks so most likely there will probably only be a few people who actually get caught smoking. And they certainly are not going post cops in parks just to enforce a smoking law. I'm certain a good deal of these laws are passed to make it harder for smokers in order to encourage them to stop. I work at one place where they had an outdoor smoking area. A lot of the smokers complained because there wasn't any covering to protect them from the rain and snow. The owner said the company was not going to put any covering up and if the smokers didn't like standing in the rain or snow they could just quit. Of course, the company provided help for those who wanted to quit.

Smoking is banned indoors just about everywhere her now but people can still smoke outside. I'm glad I never started smoking as I love standing next to a smoker. Did I tell you this before? I told someone so apologies if I'm repeating myself.

Second hand smoke is sure a killer. I wrote a series of articles a few years ago about COPD and second hand smoke. And you know what? I hadn't realized that SHS was probably affecting pets too. It hadn't entered my mind. I always made the kids go outside to smoke and hated the smoke but never realized it would have affected our pets as well as the little ones.

There are many public places where smoking is banned. Funny how things have changed over the years, isn't it?

i understand that smoking and second-hand smoke is unhealthy and i hate the smell as well, but I don't necessarily think that it should be banned in outdoor spaces. it's outdoors where there's plenty of space... even when i happen to walk by a smoker these days, if it is outdoors, i only notice the odor briefly. i'm not standing by them inhaling the bad second hand smoke... i don't know. i feel like the rules go just a little too far and verge on taking away freedom...

I think it is a great idea. They've banned smoking on the beaches here and it has worked.

@JamesHxstatic Do they enforce the rules when they make them? I hope it helps. I also hate inhaling someone else's smoke when I do not smoke myself.
