The weeds have been fighting back

My husband was working late today so I decided to hit the weeds in the garden and in just two hours, I completely filled the massive wheelie garden bin. I've cleared a couple of beds, chopped down the annoying little trees that keep popping up - though I have NO idea where they float in from - and had a darned good go at the brambles. The problem is that the brambles fight back. My arms look like I've been fighting with the cats. I'm never entirely sure that some of the things I'm pulling up are actually weeds but I work on the theory that the bigger fight they put up, the more likely it is that they shouldn't be there. As a child or teenager, I really couldn't have thought of something more tedious than weeding, but recently I've come to find a sense of satisfaction in creating a massive mound of unwanted greenery.

Even though we're in autumn, our weeds have been invading faster than ever! If only this rain would stop so I too could go on a weed attack.

I know what you mean @Valmnz . I weeded one patch last week and it's full again.

@valmnz I'm harvesting greenery for the guinea pigs, but unfortunately they don't eat buttercup and my garden is full of the darn stuff.

I know where the annoying little trees come from in my garden - those pesky squirrels plant them! They find acorns and horse chestnuts and bury them.

No, I can understand that. You get an immediate payback for your effort. It's quite therapeutic. I would not do it if I didn't enjoy it.

Maybe you should wear your diving costume. It covers your arms. :-)

The problem is that I get pretty warm pulling them up and always take my jacket off. Then the brambles fight back.

When I lived in my old house, gardening was a huge part of my life and so were the weeds. I hated weeding, but oh how I loved how the beds looked when I was finished! And then I knew my plants and flowers would grow even better!

I have the same problem. I especially detest those who chose to grow right within my fence - they destroy it! In my frustration, I sprayed weed killer on them a couple of weeks ago. That should teach them. But I know that many will come still.

@boiboing - Weeds in the garden are nothing at all when you compare them to the weeds some folks have inside their skulls.

Have you tried using a hoe? Your arms would not be damaged.

I'm not good at hoeing and in this case I'm scrabbling inside lavender bushes to find the brambles. Not really hoe territory.

It must be an age thing. I hate gardening but love that sense of achievement when the garden is finally weed free. If you'd now like to pop round and weed mine that would be fabulous!

Stuff grows so fast over there, doesn't it? We get plenty of weeds too but seeing my son's garden in Ireland is very off-putting. Everything is so lush and 'wet'.

The problem is that once the bin is full, you end up with piles of greenery that you want to get rid of and nowhere to put them. And then a few weeks later more grows!

We have the biggest garden on our short road and are the keenest gardeners. The local council collect garden waste every two weeks and we have TWO bins (I think my husband pinched the second from number 2 who have no green fingers at all). When we're particularly active, all the other neighbours 'lend' us the space in their brown bins. We also have a bizarre situation where one refuse company collects one side of the main road in the morning and a different one comes down the other side in the afternoon. So the bin men in the morning told my husband to run home, refill the bins and then put them out on the other side in the afternoon.

@bwjsdems We have three compost bins and I find no sooner do we fill them than they're magically half empty again very quickly. The garden waste we put out for the collection is generally the stuff you can't - or wouldn't want - to compost.

@boiboing Our council is considering adding organic refuse to the bin collections, but at the moment we have to compost our own, pay for our own bins or take it to the tip. I have two compost bins but they fill up fast when I get going.

I always loved gardening, but as a child I had more time to do it! Now the weeds are frequently taking over.

One thing I hate is pulling weeds. I get out a can of weed killer and spray them.
