This Memorial Day edition of Into the Groovy (#64) takes us to Pennsylvania, birthplace of Donnie Iris. You might remember a song called "The Rapper" by a band called The Jaggerz. That was Donnie Iris. He also did a stint in Wild Cherry (after "Play that Funky Music.") In 1980 Iris released his solo debut, Back on the Streets. That album spawned "Ah! Leah!," a hard rocker that hit #29 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #6 in Canada. And what's more Groovy than a geeky-looking fellow rocking out? He's pretty Groovy indeed.

I've liked it ever since I saw him lip-synch it on Solid Gold.

@JohnRoberts - Yes. I think Dionne Warwick was the host at that time. I swear there was nothing else on!

Love it. LOVE it. LOVE IT!!!! It played on my iPod on the way to the country music conference one day last week, so I had to flush my ears out with Hank Williams. His other hit, "Love Is Like a Rock," is great, too, but "Ah Leah" is one of the great underrated and overlooked songs of the 80s.

I agree. I don't know anyone who remembered this. Sad.
