Today is National Doughnut Day. Are you eating a doughnut today? Did you know this day honors the Salvation Army when they first served their doughnuts in 1917. During World War II the Salvation Army women were sent to the front lines. They made home cooked meals for the troops often using the metal helmets of an Amercian soldier. Salvation Army ladies were the only women outside of military personnel allowed at the front lines. Lt. Colonel Helen Purviance is considered the Salvation Army's "first doughnut girl".

I had no idea that the donut had such long historic and admirable roots. But.......I still won't be eating one today, too many calories for this girl!

I did not know that! Today they are handing out free donuts at some donut shops but I will not be taking in part because of the long lines.

@infatuatedbby That is the reason for the free donuts is because of it being National Doughnut Day and I image there are some long lines.

That is interesting. I had no idea they cooked for the troops. I love donuts but rarely eat them, they are too addictive.

@JustBhem I think you would have to pay or some of those donuts as I image there is a limit of how many are free.

@Marcyaz It would be very fun if we also celebrate donut day here. That means we need to enjoy every donut we have for free.

@Macarrosel Since you don't have this celebration maybe you could start it in your country by letting others know about it.

So interesting to know there is a "donut girl" during those days, and they had done well to help the soldiers in the warfront.

Nope, no donut eating here. They are good but bad for you healthwise though one won't kill you.
