Six years ago this summer, my aunt, who I was very close to, passed away after a brief struggle with cancer. Recently, I have been thinking of her a lot and missing her creativity and sharp sense of humor. This is a poem I wrote shortly after she died. I know that you are fully happy now, More fully you than you could be before, And praised be God, I scarcely can say how: I’m happy also, in my heart’s deep core. For you this world’s restraints are wholly gone, How truly great and wondrous that must be! Therefore I know when all my tears are gone, Some part of my heart, also can feel free. And lasting peace I know is also yours, For Peace’s Prince has softly called you home, And over, then, my troubled spirit pours: A still, small calm that guides me as I roam. -CSF August 2010

There are those who believe our love ones who pass away are watching over us. There is no scientific proof but it's a comforting thought. It fills an emotional need and a way for us to move pass the grief. You obviously pour out your feelings in the passages of the poem.

There are many ways to think about the passing of a loved one, but thinking of my aunt in a better place and writing about it definitely helped me the most. Thanks for reading.

Oh, thank you. I didn't intend to make anyone cry, but I'm glad you felt the sincerity of the poem. I've not shared many of my serious poems, but I like to share this one with others, from time to time, in hopes they'll feel a little comfort about loss or saying goodbye.

@puddleglum They do say that you have to be sad to write good poetry, which is why most of my stuff is silly - I'm happy most of the time!

I appreciate your kind words. I've heard of people that describe these kind of visits, but I never have--only in my memory.

This is such a wonderful, heartfelt, beautiful poem. I enjoyed it and appreciate your sharing it. I am glad that it comforts you and I believe that your aunt appreciates it too. I like to believe that our loved ones who have passed watch over us too and that when we pass we will join them in heaven in eternity. I am sorry for your loss but am glad that you have come to terms with it in a sense though I know you will always miss her. I have a good friend who's father is dying from cancer and I feel for her and her family too. I have also written poems and maybe I could share 1 here sometime. God bless you.

Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your thoughts and beliefs on this. As believers, loss and grief, as difficult as they are, can often serve to compel us to affirm or reaffirm what we believe about eternal life--even if there is doubt and questioning--sometimes that's part of the process. That is something to be thankful for. I hope you will share your poems in the future.

I am sorry for your loss, and I remember what St. Paul says in 2 Cor, to be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord, I am glad that you had the reminding inside you about this, because that is a very precious comfort.

Thank you. It is a precious comfort. It lends proper perspective to so many of life's sorrows--both close, family ones, and larger world events.
