Avocado Plants

I carried avocado plants to my sister and nephew yesterday when we went to the reunion. I've planted avocado seed in pots for the last several months. I was curious to know it they would actually sprout and they did. They have grown as large as I think they can in pots. So, I want to see if the plants will grow in garden soil. My sister who lives in Alabama is taking hers to plant in her Alabama garden, and my nephew will plant his in his garden In Georgia. I had already given my sister in Georgia one avocado plant but I don't think it's thriving in her yard. What do you guys know about avocados? I still have several in pots on my deck, where they get little sun and they are very spindly. Do any of you grow avocados? I looked up avocados on the net and found they grow mostly in Mexico and Florida.

I have tried growing avocados, but (of course) the plants do not grow in Switzerland. The avocados imported here are mainly from Mexico and Peru, the biggest and more expensive come from California.

@LadyDuck I had forgotten that I gave a plant to my better half's daughter when I wrote this article, She saw the article on facebook and says her plant is growing and looking well in her Atlanta garden.We'll see if it lasts through next winter.

It might be avocados require warmer weather, but we have hot summers. I have never seen them growing other than mine in pots. I would love to see a grown plant. Maybe one will grow in Alabama.

That's the way my better half eats avocados. I don't put sugar on mine. I like them best in a sandwich with salad dressing. I don't care for them in salads or cooked in recipes.

I have many fruit trees in my garden but somehow the avocado tree has refused to yield for reasons unknown. I am sad.

@RubyHawk i did fer a few years, faced the same troubles without a grow light. i'd thought'f keepin' 'em, see if'n they'd e'er turn into a tree'n produce, but that takes 't least 5 years'f growth 'n lots'f water. i dunno if'n ya mulched 'em well if'n they'd survive the cold'r not??

Did you grown them in huge pots? I still have some on the deck but they look so spindly. I was hoping they would grow in my nephews or sisters garden, but our winters are probably too cold.

@just4him We do have cold days, the temperature gets down in the twenties, but it doesn't last long. We have about abou tfour months of fairly cold weather and the temperature dips frequently.

My nephew has a green thumb so maybe he will have good luck, although if it takes warm weather year around, probably not. We have fairly cold winters in our part of Georgia.

As most have mentioned, Avocados are not for winter but also not for tropical weather. Although there are avocados from tropical countries, the fruits does not seem to be good as there are sometimes veins like or roots in the meat. I would say so far the best avocado that I have seen and eat are from New Zealand. Once I have my own farm I will get those seeds and plant them in farm. I like avocados with milk :-)

That's great that vocado plants so easily in your side. It seems that the vocado can't be planted here as I can't seen them available in my country. So the vocados are imported and they are usually expensive.

Oh well, nothing lost nothing gained, at least I had the fun of seeing them sprout into plants. Some are getting tall but they are fragile.

We have 3 avocado trees planted in my parents house, they're fruit bearing now. These trees are easily to plant, once they grow, you can leave them and wait 'til it bear fruits.

I have planted avocado 2 years ago in my tropical garden but I don't know if it's growing as I left my home country. I have avocado tree though in one of my small land where my sister and her family live and they are harvesting every year. If I am there I get to eat them as well.
