The use of Turmeric in Hinduisim

Turmeric belongs to Ginger family It is also used as medicine in India.Besides its medicinal properties, it has also got religious significance The Botanical name is Curcuma Longa. The plant has got both rhizome and flower part. But, the rhizome part is widely used one. It is applied to the bride as a part of Purification ritual before the wedding ceremony. Its usage is forbidden when a house is in mourning. In South India the dried turmeric is worn as an amulet againt an evil eye and for good luck. It is made into a paste. The dietees are anointed with the paste in the Hindu religion. It is often used to create the traditional saffron-coloured robes worn by Buddhist monks. Before startig any prayer, the idoil of the Lord Ganesh is prepared with turmeric and is worshipped for obstructions not to come in the way of their activities.
