If you want to be a good writer, you have to be an excellent reader

Reading many qualified books written by excellent, renamed and experienced writers helps anyone on his or her way to be a better writer. Reading other writers, we learn not only from their contents and ideas, but also from their styles and technics. Our minds are getting more open and wider. We learn about new skylines flying to other countries and worlds of fantasy. Do you usually read a lot? Who is your favorite writer?

I love to read especially when I am feeling very stress already and I cannot travel. Reading makes me forget my problems. Through reading, I can still travel and learn. I read books whenever I have a time and one of the authors whom I admire is Paulo Coelho and Elizabeth Gilbert. Someday I want to be like them. I want to be able to write too and create my own stories.

@Meramar That is true although writing is not an easy task specially if you are not used to it. Are you already publishing your own write-ups?

Those are excellent writers. Initially, they also had to learn writing, as now we have to. Writing is a great activity. I like writing a lot. Everyone has got a special story to tell.

@annierose Until now, I published the first one, the second one is already finished but still resting on my desk waiting to be published. At the moment, I am working on the third one. If you want to write, don't wait for the right moment, as it never comes. Just make a project and start working on it.

I love to read, reading is a great escape and like you said, it teahces you how to write in a way. Usually I have my favorite authors in my mind when I'm writing. I like Dean Koontz, Nora Roberts and Danielle Steele. Dean Koontz is someone that I would love to embody when I write, mainly because he uses so many descriptive words in his writing. I'm not that good at putting descriptive words where they fit in my stories.

But, reading the authors we like, we learn unconsciously, that's why we never should stop reading.

I read a lot. Yor are right to some extent. I just do not know what books Shakespeare and Milton have read before becoming great. Reading may be useful for modern writers.

Personally I think if you want to be a good writer, you have to want the money very much. Nobody will know about Harry Potter if the author is rich enough to afford luxury in life. Her poverty forces her to write. In the past, Louisa May Alcott needed money too, and she started writing. That was a better way of earning money than to go out and work.

In her case, poverty forces her to write, as you well said, and she had luck, because the had a nice story to tell and she knew how to write it. Otherwise, there are many other persons outside who also need to improve their economical position and love to write, but they don't have the same luck. The reasons may be very different: it might be, because they don't have an interesting story to write, or they might not know how to write it, or maybe they don't know how to afford the publicity.... anyway, if you don't try it, you never will know if to be a writer might be the right job for you.
