A beautiful bug in my garden

We've had this gorgeous black and red bug in our garden for a few days, it's taken a liking to a huge new geranium plant we bought recently and has been back so many times it's almost starting to feel like a little wild pet! It's really striking, I don't think it's a butterfly as the body when it opens its beautiful wings out is too bee-like - I'd guess at it being a moth if I had to box it, not again it's nothing like any moth I've seen. I've taken a few photos of it over the past few days but as it tends to perch on blades of grass they've all come out blurry as the bug has been caught in the wind. A couple of minutes ago though it landed on my sons coat which is on the line drying and I was able to get this snap which I'm quite pleased with - unless anyone out there knows definitively what it is I'll use the pic to do some research later on.
