I liked my post yesterday of Sam and Dave's "Hold On I'm Coming" so much that I doing Sam and Dave's classic "Soul Man." Both songs were written by Isaac Hayes (yes, "Chef" and Shaft himself) David Porter. Booker T and the MGs were Stax Records house band and performed on the "Soul Man" recording but do not appear in this vintage concert clip as they did on "Hold On I'm Coming." "Soul Man" was a huge hit reaching Billboard Hot 100 #2 and has become a much covered standard. The most successful cover came in 1979 by the Blues Brothers (Joliet Jake and Elwood better known as John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) which charted at #14. This live concert clip showcases what a pair of polished slick performers Sam and Dave were and dig that horn section!

That video brought back some good memories. My older brother is so fond of this kind of music.

What a fabulous song. I tend to forget the Blues Brothers' version, even though theirs was the first time I heard this song.

What a classic! Everything Isaac Hayes touched was gold. This was made even moreso with the level of talent involved.
