Is it necessary to watch Pokemon anime or play any other Pokemon games before playing Pokemon Go?

I was introduced to the Pokemon franchise just a couple of days ago when I installed the Pokemon Go Game, and I must say I'm loving it!
But I see all my friends getting excited on catching a particular Pokemon and I have no idea why they're so happy..
Please suggest all the movies, anime, cartoons, games etc that I have to play before playing Pokemon Go so that I can understand the story and the characters beforehand.

It is not necessary but the Anime is enjoyable to watch, The game though is pretty much stand alone.
