Why We're In the Shape We're In

I saw a comment from a friend of mine on my Facebook feed this afternoon. He said something along the lines of, "Just to think about hearing something a Republican says makes me shudder." And, he had lots of "likes," thumbs ups, and agreeing comments. But that's exactly why we're in the shape we're in. NOBODY wants to listen to "the other side." It's nothing but "I'm right and they're wrong," and no dialogue whatsoever. I'm thoroughly convinced that if George W. Bush developed a cure for cancer Democrats would dismiss it as a ploy to cut funding. And, by the same token, if Bill Clinton found the cure for Alzheimer's the Republicans would say it's just another scheme to raise taxes. There's a great line from Don Henley -- probably one of my favorite lines ever in one of his songs -- in the song "Lilah." It says: We spend so much time weeping and wailing and shaking our fists Creating enemies that really don't exist The motto of my home state, Kentucky, is "United we stand, divided we fall." That's a paraphrase of the Biblical verse that says, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." This nation is on the brink of destruction, simply because we'd rather argue or fight than listen, discuss, and -- gasp -- admit that maybe someone else is right and we're wrong. Here's the Henley song with that great line in it:
