The Bravery of Pets (or not)

One word I would NEVER use to describe my cat is brave. She's the original "scairdy cat". She came to us when she was 6 months old. She was driven up here from Texas by my in laws, so I know she was never abused or anything. But any little noise or movement makes her jump or run or arch her back. It's just the wildest thing. This evening, I had just come back from getting the mail. In it, was a little package with a gift for my cat. I guess she could smell it, because she came running. I sat at my table (overlooking the carnival) and opened the package. She came up on the table and saw the flashing lights, heard the laughter and screams down below and immediately began growling! We are 13 floors up from all of that, and yet she growled at them for quite some time. And then she jumped off the table to leave. I coaxed her back to give her the gift (a catnip pillow). She liked it but not enough to stay in the same room overlooking "that". So she's now sleeping in the bedroom, ignoring everyone clearly having fun below. She is having none of that this evening. hmph! -Claudia- photo is mine (said "brave" cat)

Poor cat, they are like humans, some are brave and some not at all.

Yes, that's very true. I just wish that after 13 years of being with me, she would know that no one is going to hurt her. But at least she does trust me.

Poor cat. It must be awful to spend half your life afraid.

@CRK109 She is lucky to have such an understanding owner. My little cat was tiny but would take on dogs that come onto our property.

She is the most anxiety ridden thing I've ever seen. I snuggle her whenever she will let me. When we moved here, I thought she would die of fright and I kept holding her and talking to her and she finally calmed down. But no matter how calm she gets, something always sets her off again. And she's been with me 13 years. I guess it's just who she is.

If a burglar came in here, my cat would just hide until they left, no matter how much they took! And it doesn't even matter if I'm here. Whenever someone comes to the apartment, she races into the bedroom and hides out until they are gone.

I wish I knew why my cat is so terrified of everything. She only feels safe when she's with me. Even this morning when those people came into the apartment to change out the lightbulbs, I had no idea where she was since I'd been sleeping, but after they left I saw her come out from the other side of my bedroom. She's gotten very good at running and hiding!

Even that high up from everything she is scared of all the noise. I'm glad she likes her pillow. Cute picture of her.

I think it was more all the flashing lights. Before it was just a vacant lot so it must have given her a huge start when she got on her perch and saw something completely different. They quiet down after 10pm and she's very happy once they are gone! lol

Aww hope she is coping okay. Our neighbours cats seem to love our garden and are always in it playing, but whenever we go out they get so scared and run off.

I think she's at least getting used to the sounds. It must have been a shock to her because what used to be a vacant lot is suddenly filled with flashing lights and screaming! She basically told them all to get lost. She's not in the window anymore and before long they will all be gone. And she will be much happier! lol
