A couple of days ago, I watched the Fandom Awards on MTV. It was only an hour long, and there were barely any awards. It was mostly commercials. And despite being smaller, it followed the tradition of other award shows and nominated the most popular of the popular (like Game of Thrones). When I first heard about it a few weeks prior, I thought it was going to be dumb. The word fandom conjures up thoughts of teenage SuperWhoLock fans or Star Wars nerds. I acknowledge enjoying things being a fan of some things but not being in a fandom. But when I watched the actual awards, I realized what it was all about. The awards, as silly as they were (favorite ship, best bandom, etc), really were about the fans and acknowledged how the fans were what carried a lot of shows. I also realized that being in a fandom was about being in a community and sharing all aspects of a show, band, or whatever with other people. It's a continuing experience and it's a continuing love. I'm really used to just watching and thinking about things on my own or with my siblings, so it didn't really occur to me that I could be missing out on another level of content enjoyment. So as silly as the awards were, I appreciate them.
