Another Good Idea

This afternoon I came home from staying my sister and her family for a week. The visit was delightful, but the drive was brutal (both ways). My sister and brother are retired. My sister is fifteen years out from a lung transplant (they usually give out after three years). My brother-in-law is in lots of pain from falling off the roof and not really recovering. They live with their two grown daughters and their wonderful adopted Chinese daughters. There is lots of activity in the house, most of it dealing with electronics. The four young women/girls are really into computers, iPads, iPhones and the assorted games that go with them. One daughter is an attorney, the other a computer person, both work at the same large company (You would know it, if I mentioned it). The girls are in elementary school, but going to Mine Craft Camp at a local university this summer. All four girls are into travel, often on cruise ships. One of the adults, the lawyer, is especially keen about cruising, and loves my idea of spending my retirement on cruise ships. We chatted about this at length. When I told her about my intention of writing a blog about this, she suggested I make videos for YouTube. What a great idea. Then her sister chimed in, telling me how easy it would be if I used iMovie on my iPad. There are other ways of making them, of course, but she said they are far more complex. Since I’m into “simple”, I downloaded iMovie on my iPad right then. Once I take my “test drive” cruise to Alaska, and decide this is a go, I’ll take a class at my local Apple Store. Easy peasy. Do you like to watch videos on YouTube? What type do you enjoy?

Love the idea of spending retirement on cruise ships. I'm considering buying a motor home and spending retirement visiting the many beautiful places in the UK I've been far too busy to go to. I once tried to do a video post for Bubblews. While I may be a semi-reasonable writer I'm no presenter. I gave up on the idea!!

It is possible to make a video without being a presenter. Go play on YouTube and you'll see all sorts of ways to make them even if you never show your face.

@ElizabethWallace Somebody came up with the idea of doing video posts on Bubblews where we just talked to camera rather than typed the post. My attempt would have been far better without my face in it!! I'm not particularly visually creative so I doubt videos are my bag!!

@WorDazza I think your face is just fine. My sister would like to do the videos to promote her books on her health issues, but she does not want to show her face. I explained how she can do them with pictures from the public domain (she no longer goes out much). I don't think she will though, takes too much focus.

Wow- what a cool and ambitious endeavour there Elizabeth- I'd love to do that although I'm hopeless at tech- what a lovely idea!

I'm not quite hopeless, but will take a class or two before I go, so that my skills are better.

@MarymargII I've never been intimidated by new technology. If I need to know something, I find someone to teach me.

@ElizabethWallace ha- but I do learn quickly if I get the right instructions, especially visual ones!

Sounds like a great idea. You could put music in the background for entertainment value if you wanted or make it a talkie?

@ElizabethWallace As long as you have fun doing it then that is what matters most right? I like all the editing tools available now for videos compared to years ago when one would need a recording studio.

@Bluedoll From what my nieces say, it should be fairly easy. If it is, I will probably enjoy the process. After all, I'll be doing them while sitting in the shade on a cruise ship.

Since I will be doing lots of them, I could do both. I can use music that is in the public domain. I'll have to find a site for that, but I'm sure it won't be too hard to find.

I like to watch videos on YouTube, especially tutorials and 'how to' videos. I also watch cooking videos, some are very well done and interesting. As usual, there is a lot of garbage online, you have to make a lot of searches to find something worths watching.

That does sound like a good idea. I very rarely watch YouTube, but do sometimes look at the ones that are linked on someone's post here.

Remember how Martha Stewart started her empire? She promoted her magazine on her tv show, her products in her magazine, and the circle continued. Oprah copied her technique. I think I will too. A blog, a FaceBook page and a YouTube channel, oh, and my book! Neat.

@jaboUK Their example will be simple to follow, since they are so obvious. I don't know if I want to do all that work, but if it ends up being quick and easy, I'll do it.

Long drive can be really tough, they used to not bother me at all. We could go on a 12 hours drive barely stopping. Now, I have to walk around and have a stop every few hours. Glad you got to visit with them

@ElizabethWallace oh no, I am sorry you got nastiness, especially right off the bat like that. I like to listen to the radio and not have to tell anybody "shhhh" so I can hear.

@mom210 The radio is the only thing that makes it tolerable when the traffic is stop and go. I hate that.

The long drive is why I haven't visited much lately. I got a nasty comment at the door when I arrived. But driving alone is such a bore and tough. None of them ever drive that way, so they are unaware.

Just to let you know that Youtube is inaccessible in some countries like China here. So you might want to find another hosts if you have friends in these countries that ban Youtube.

I would watch videos on YouTube - and still will - but someone mentioned on here somewhere that sometimes viruses are hidden in YouTube clips. There is always something isn't there?

I usually just upload the videos on the uploader for youtubes app. The larger files give me trouble maybe I need to see what iMovie is.

It sounds like quite a project! I do not tend to watch YouTube at all. The odd video makes it to the news so I see those ones. My husband has used many tutorials for his DIY projects around the house.
