The Air Conditioning Conked Out

Having the a/c stop working and needing repair in this heat is the worst. That's the phone call I got from my daughter this morning. She said the a/c stopped working overnight and she had to call three repairmen before she could get someone to come out today to look at it. I'm sure with this heat they are all very busy and she's lucky she found someone to come today. So, instead of going to see my mom this afternoon (which was my plan) I'm staying home so the grandkids can come over and be cool in my house. My poor daughter will wait in her hot house for the repairman. Now I have to make some tuna salad so we have lunch and maybe the kids and I can watch a movie this afternoon. I'm really hoping they can get the a/c fixed at my daughters house today and it won't either need a part that has to be ordered or cost a fortune. It's always something isn't it

I feel her pain, We lost our A/C along with hubby's job last year. He has a part time job now but needless to say, that will not buy a new unit. So we use the ceiling fans and the attic fan over night to get it as cool as possible so we can close it all up and ride out the day. I can actually keep it about 9 degrees below the outside temp with a little work. I hope she can get hers fixed soon, this is the crazy time of the year though.

9 degrees below the outside seems good to me. Do you achieve that just with the ceiling fans ? Always remember to close every window and don't let any sunlight to get inside. What do you do to keep your house cool besides using the fans ? When I worked at the storage of building materials, we had a chiller that worked on water. I filled it with water and it made a wind and vaporized the water (but also made a lot of humidity lol) so the wind was a little bit cool. I couldn't leave that chiller though :-)

@Marilynda1225 we do the same thing, I close the curtains as soon as the sun comes out. In the winter I do the opposite, Because I want the heat.

even though I have central a/c it's expensive so I keep the temperatures on the higher side and use fans to lower the temperature so the house is comfortable but not cold. I also keep the blinds closed so the sun doesn't bring the temperature up in the house

Sometimes when the air conditioner stops working, it can be an easy problem. if it works but can't cool down, it can be a bigger problem. Maybe the mother board is broken, maybe there is a gas leak, maybe the thermostat is wrong... I hope the problem is just a wire that needs to be replaced. Please tell me what the problem was, it is interesting.

Yes it is always something. I am sorry to hear that Marilyn. I hope they come quickly and fix it for your daughter. I can rarely run mine bcoz of smokers downstairs.

I'm sure running the a/c because of smokers will only draw the smoke into your place?

We don't have AC and how I wish we have. We only have fan to keep us confortable with the hot weather. Hope your daughter's AC will fix as soon as possible.

Ac problems are the worst during this time of the year well actually its the worst anytime of the year to be honest. I like working for a general contractor because anytime something goes wrong i know who to call and whom will help me out in the situation. My boyfriends parents had a AC problem this past weekend and the guy came right out, thank god as they have company over, they just put freeon in the system but stated that they had a block in the unit somewhere and would need to be repaired which is no fun at all as they just got a new unit a few years back. Im glad you were able to take your grandkids in and help them out in this situation its just no fun your daughter has to be there in the heat of the day.

It's not only expensive but hard to find someone to come and fix it with the temperatures being so hot. Guess these companies are getting lots of business

He came and fixed it mid afternoon but she hasn't come to pick the kids up yet so I don't know any of the details. If she's crying I know it was expensive

I really hate when the heat or a/c breaks down. It always costs so much and always happens when its the hottest or coldest.

seems as if my daughters a/c got fixed but she hasn't come to pick up the kids yet and I don't know if it was a minor thing or an expensive fix

I hope they got it repaired for her. You're right, not a good time for the A/C to go out. But is it ever a good time for that?

That's awful! It's very dangerous for an a/c to not work in the Summer in some parts of the world.
