STOP SETTING ABSURD DEFINITION OF BEAUTY

India
August 4, 2016 2:38pm CST
I seriously pity those people who mark standards of beauty on the basis of skin color or any other physical features. I was asked by an acquaintance of mine "Your elder sister is so fair. Why aren't you? Do you not try some fairness cream or something?" I responded " I do not mind my brown color. also I do not have time to ponder it, I am dedicated to other greater things than this". Can we please let go off this old norms and absurdities ?? That beauty will not even last in 20 to 30 years from now. I have been through that age when these retorts would frustrate me to the core, and it is never good to face such disheartening comments from anyone for that matter. There are many young girls and boys who succumb to these taunts and loathsome judgement. We need to get rid of this as soonest as possible. Please.

I think it's quite funny that browner people want to be whiter and spend money on whitening cream or whatever whereas whiter people want to be browner and spend money on fake tan and such

@Mike197602 And spend billions on going on holiday/vacation to countries where they lie in the sun to get a tan until they get skin cancer!

@TheHorse Yes, that happens because people want stuff which they do not have or possess. But why can we not just be happy with what we have or what we are. The skin color discrimination is so rampant in our country and the psychological pressure that it creates on young minds destroys their lives. We have several campaigns in our country which aim to fight against this prejudice, but there has been no significant result.

I agree, but I don't think it's going away. Here in the United States, the cosmetics industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. If corporations can keep people looks-obsessed (and insecure), they will sell lots of product. Interesting that where people are a bit darker (Africa, India, etc.) people want to be lighter, while pale people (US, UK, etc.) try to get "savage tans." We have to look beyond the fashion trend de jour and get to know people for who they are.

In about 20 or more years, they'll wish they hadn't done all that stuff to their skin. I just take a look at all the tanners here with their worn, leather like skin and think "Yeah..I'll pass. Thanks."

that artificial beauty never lasts, does not come close to being what natural charm is. I hope everybody could think in that way. Thanks :)

i remember reading an article about cosmetic enhancements in the us and how the trend is rising among younger women, that one surgeon had a client who actually said they don't mind looking weird from too many procedures as long as they don't look old. that's another relentless trend, too, to look forever young or more like frozen in time.

@positivesoul i think the problem with cosmetic enhancements is once you start, you think of other areas to enhance, or whatever you had done, you want to improve on after a few years, so it's like a chain reaction.

I feel sorry for those people, you know. For a momentary thing like beauty, they go overboard and damage their entire lives. Rather, one should inculcate stronger foundation of knowledge, wisdom, sense of humor, those qualities will always stay irrespective of time and age.

Just ignore people like that because they are ignorant. All colors are beautiful. Those skin lightening creams cause cancer. So, do not EVER use them. People need to start loving themselves.

I don't mind being brown. These pathetic comments hardly affect me, but I feel worried about the younger generation. They are made insecure about their looks at a young age.

It wont go away easily as its part of a bigger problem. That bigger problem is that lot of people live to impress others rather than enjoy their own life. Harsh truth is that most of have lust to possess something exclusive which others don't have. Beauty is yet another way to impress others, you see not everyone has a hot boyfriend or girlfriend, those few who have get a feeling of possessing something greater than everyone else. So being beautiful makes you center of attraction. Although i am not suggesting or trying to generalize that everyone who has a hot partner are in relationship to impress others, people genuinely and truly love each other too.

Yes, I agree, and talking about the bigger problem, one can see body shaming and skin color discrimination are not restricted within the boundaries of India rather they range world wide. When being beautiful makes one center of attraction, you must have meant physical beauty by this. Your estimation is right. But that is the thing people must understand. Physicality or sexuality wont last. There's no drawing line to this bigger problem, it is tragic. :(

It's their choice. Some people are just lured by the deception of beauty product commercials, others tend to over use beauty products that faced consquences on their health. While most had been brainwashed to the point of comparing their natural face to the beauty being described in showbiz or commercial products. It can't be help until the person matures and finds true love.

Friend, true love or life partner comes much later in life. It is the family pressure on young people since their tender age. Maturity is needed, of course, but a collective change in mindsets is an essential. Thanks :)
