I would have selected "The Ballad of Johnny Yuma" from the TV series "The Rebel" but fourwalls included the song on the Johnny Cash list. Many of you will remember "Maverick" (1957-62) which made James Garner a star and remains popular in rerunland. Garner co-starred in the 1994 movie version with Mel Gibson. Garner player gambler extraordinaire Bret Maverick finding action and trouble wherever he goes. That was the basis of this short title song: "Maverick is a legend of the west Luck is the lady he loves best" "Maverick" was composed by Paul Francis Webster and David Buttolph. Lyricist Webster was a three time Academy Award winner whose best known songs are "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" and "Secret Love." Buttolph did the themes for TV western classics "Wagon Train" and "The Virginian." The identity of the male singers is unknown.
From Wikipedia: "Maverick is an American Western television series with comedic overtones created by Roy Huggins. The show ran from September 22, 1957 to Jul...

Warner Bro.s put out several TV Westerns during the "Maverick" era, each with their own themes. Do you remember "Cheyene" , Clint Walker, "Sugarfoot", Will Hutchens, and "Bronco Lane", Ty Hardin?

Bronco was actually a spin off from Cheyenne. I have seen every episode of Cheyenne as it plays on Encore Westerns channel. The late 50s early 60s was the golden era of TV westerns.

Garner got embroiled over contract and was transitioning to movies. Jack Kelly took over as Bart Maverick.

I have a theme going though my head now, but I'm not sure if it's from Hang 'em High or The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Great series and a great theme song. Rawhide had a good one too, sung, I think, by Frankie Lane.

Half of the greatness of the westerns was their theme songs. Let's face it, all the plots were the same: stranger rides in from out of town (a) looking for trouble or (b) trying to escape his past.
