My Ten Favorite Walk Songs: Walkin' Around (#7)

Before braving the heat of the afternoon to chase a white ball down green carpet I'll take a moment to highlight another song that's on my list of my ten favorite "walk" songs, song with "walk" (or some variation of the word) in the title. #7: Walkin' Around - Marshall Crenshaw Yesterday I shamefully admitted that "Sleepwalker" was my first shout-out to the Kinks. Equally embarrassing is this, my first Marshall Crenshaw post. As a friend of mine says frequently, Crenshaw's debut album in 1982 is perhaps the most perfect power-pop album in history. I know this much, it's dang good. Crenshaw has a loyal cult following, including myself, thanks to his great music, his radio program (The Bottomless Pit), or his appearance as Buddy Holly in La Bamba. (And, in celebration of that role, he does a Buddy Holly song every concert.) For me, it always goes back to his fabulous music. In 1991 his album Life's Too Short recaptured all of the glory of that first album, while addressing tougher topics (such as "Better Back Off" and "Stop Doing That," both about trying to get a friend to stop doing drugs). But this great song is just another fabulous Marshall Crenshaw song. This one deals with a couple on the brink of breaking up deciding to take a walk to try to sort out their differences. Nothing is resolved in the song ("I've got nothing to say, we're just walkin' around on a warm Saturday"), but you leave feeling so good that you don't really care. Yep. Great nerdy power pop. I always liked him. I could totally see the Smithereens doing this one too.

He is another name that I know but have never listened to until now. Sort of a country rock vibe.
