Heat vs Humidity. There's a Difference.

(This is my response to @Raelove 's post, 'The Hell that Is Humidity') I've spent time in Tucson, Arizona and Kisumu, Kenya. The two places share a weather relieving factor: humidity is low. I've come to find that it isn't the actual sunlight or heat that bothers me; it's the humidity. The feeling of slick, sweaty skin that is suffocated by the clinging of moist cotton makes me immediately uncomfortable. I despise how once in the security of air conditioning, clothes must be peeled off and immediately thrown into the dryer. In the humidity, clothes are a one time use as stinky sweat has soaked them through completely. The dry heat is wonderful. I remember sitting out under an acacia tree in Kenya thinking that it was at least 10 degrees cooler in the shade than in the direct sunlight. And then later that day, we (my schoolmates and professor) hiked to a near by school to "challenge" the local soccer/football club to a match. The school was up a hill right on Lake Victoria, and I swear, the same day I was thinking about how hot it was, I wanted a sweater. Perfect. I also ride horses. There is nothing worse than 92 degrees sunlight, 1,000% humidity, and having bits of pokey straw glued to the skin under my boobs. Not to mention the constant drip of salty sweat falling from my brow directly into my eyes. When I go to rub the saliferous irritant from my face, nothing but a wet, slippery forearm, also covered in muck and hay, is my option. Gross. Humidity is the devil, but I refuse to let it keep me down! At least, not when it comes to doing things I love. I just dream of that perfect place, where the weather is always what I want it to be, whenever I want it to be. Aka Hawaii. Aka Heaven.

England has an equable climate which suits me. We rarely get extremes and I don't think I've ever experienced humidity. You ought to come and ride horses here, I've always found it a pleasure.

I grew up in North Yorkshire and learned how to ride horses in England. By happenstance, I currently have a trainer/friend/mentor who is certified in England as well.

The humidity makes it hard for me to breathe. It can affect migraines, vertigo, those with asthma and other health conditions. oh, and my hair!

I didn't even think of those with health conditions! I am blessed enough to be in good health, so it is silly of me to be complaining about how uncomfortable I am... But it doesn't mean I can't hate on the humidity anyway ;-)

Many years ago we (Europeans) travelled to Mexico around Christmas time. I'll never forget the heat and the humidity when we stayed in a hotel in the jungle. I know I could never live there.

Everything you said about humidity is deadly accurate. It's the worst. And unfortunately, it's part of everyday life here in Florida most of the year (and everybody thinks Florida is paradise). I've had days where the humidity has been so bad that it was difficult to breath. Almost felt like drowning from breathing in so much of that moisture. This summer has been a weird one for us in northern Florida. We usually have afternoon thunderstorms every day during the summer, which does nothing but increase the humidity even more. But this has been a very dry summer, and we haven't had much rain. The result has been hotter temperatures, but very low humidity. And I absolutely loved it! Yes, I still broke out into a sweat, but it was so nice being able to walk outside and breather freely, and be able to walk from my house to my truck without my clothes being completely soaked from the humidity. But, alas, the normal rain pattern has returned to us this past week, and so our humidity levels have been through the roof! In your post above, when you said the humidity was 1000%, I think you were under-exagerting! It feels more like 10,000%!

@HaleighElizabeth I agree! I've found myself paying much more attention to all my weather apps on my phones (I have three of them...apps that is, not phones!). It seems like we don't have normal or average weather events anymore these days, everything seems to be a major weather catastrophe!

I can't help but wonder what Mother Nature is trying to tell us. There has been an increase in the severity of weather that reminds me of that personally psychologically damaging movie, "The Day After Tomorrow." I'm taking every precaution necessary whenever my phone/weather service app harasses me to look at the local alert!

Here in southern Bengal people generally confuse humidity with heat. They usually say, " How hot it is!" when saying "How humid it is!" would be more correct.

I don't care for too much heat either but we're not bothered with too much heat here in the UK! I prefer to be somewhere warm with a nice breeze.
