How do you react to a dead-end comment?

We normally post discussions and try to stimulate activity and chatting, but what do you do if someone reacts with something you can't carry on talking with? For example, a one word reply like "yes" or him/her/Apache helicopter simply giving his opinion, but no one being able to start a discussion from it? Normally what I do is to simply like to comment to show "I've read it, thanks for your response!" And give them a little cash. What about you?

What if there are, like, 10+ comments? Replying the same thank you message to that many wouldn't make much sense.

@Joel7050 Indeed! I've seen such comment threads and find this excessive thanking silly.

I try to avoid short comments, but I sometimes fail. I try to add one or two emoticons to compensate. A like is worth more than a thousand words.

Comment threads are meant to end sooner or later. They can't go on indefinitely, can they?
