What's the job called where you...

Movies and TV these days over exaggerate many aspects of life. I started watching ~30 minutes into some terrible on-basic-TV movie and and there was a woman who needed to do some investigating into a friend's new nanny. The concerned friend was able to call up her assistant (I believe the woman was a lawyer? Or at least worked for a firm?) and have her "look into" this nanny. 5 minutes later, the assistant calls her boss/friend and dishes information including the nanny's true identity and suspicious past. What is the assistant's technical job title? What is it called when you are paid to be inquisitive aka nosy, and dig up information on people?

Private investigator is the first thing that pops in my mind, followed by investigative assistant. I think in some agencies, a crime analyst can also look up information like that, but essentially they are playing the roll of investigative assistant when they do!

Perhaps there is no such job that I am seeking! You all are great for making all the suggestions. From what I've researched, it sounds like one would have to enroll in a Criminal Justice Program. Unfortunately, cash is a little short these days, so onto my Bucket List that goal goes!

@HaleighElizabeth You should apply for federal aid (Pell grants) or see if any college would offer scholarships or financial aid. That's how I was able to get through school!
