What a long day! We had a rain delay (nothing unusual for us) and some tough playing, but I'm in just six strokes off the lead. After a long day I'm ready for my foot to soak and to close my Jim Reeves list on this, the 93rd anniversary of his birth. #1: Blue Side of Lonesome My favorite song by my favorite singer. What a great song. And here's a shock: it's yet another Leon Payne tune. Originally on his album of pure country released on the budget label (I've addressed that before), Jim took Payne's song and transformed it into a masterpiece. A man is at the end of his relationship, so he heads to a bar ("a tavern that's known as Three Teardrops") to live. And the destitution is absolute, as the verse that was omitted from the later single release details: The floor has a carpet of sorrow, but no one can weep in the aisle And they say someone broke the bar mirror with only the ghost of a smile What a marvelous song.
