Bright flows the river.

This is the picture of the river Brahmaputra which flows through our state. It originates from a glacier in the Himalayas and flows downwards. It assumes various names in the different countries it flows through, finally joining the Bay of Bengal. It is huge and resembles an ocean in the rainy season. In India all the rivers are female and Brahmaputra, son of Brahma is the only male river. Now it is flowing past danger level and floods are creating havoc along the state. Many animals get washed up in the flood, last year it was a python which had scrambled to safety up to the trees which can be seen in the photo . The forest people came and carried it away to the zoo. The recent news hitting the head lines is the story of an Indian elephant that finally died due to weakness .He got separated from his herd during the floods and traveled 1700 kms into Bangladesh travelling through villages and river islands across the Brahmaputra river. Once winter comes, the waters recede and then its time for migratory birds and picnics on the sandbanks. While, I love looking at the magnificent view from our front balcony of the various moods of the river,I am aware of the destruction and suffering it causes during the floods. What river flows near where you live? photo: mine, from my balcony

That sounds like a dangerous and beautiful river. We live in the state of Oregon, where there are many rivers too. The ones nearest us are the Willamette (Wil LAMETTE) and the McKenzie rivers. We have dams that control flooding for the most part. Rivers have no gender here. What a great photo you got of that river.

@responsiveme The McKenzie was named after a Scottish-Canadian fur trader explored the area. Willamette has its origin in Native American language with various meanings over the thousands of years.

The river looks different in different times of the day and season. Were those rivers you mentioned named after people?

We just have some smaller rivers here. They cause flooding too, but mostly flooding the places people golf. There is one road that dips down over a river and the road itself will flood at different times, but overall the city isn't affected too much when the flooding happens. We have two rivers that meet downtown, I think. I also have an image of one of them at flood stage a few years ago if i can find it later I'll add it to this post.

@responsiveme I think I took some other pictures of this river in flood stage, but I'll have to look more for them. This was taken in the back of an apartment my mom stayed at the past few years. You can't tell in this picture, but there's a road that runs right under that balcony which is covered with the water there. The balcony is actually a sitting area a little bit away from the building but above the road and water. I've never gone through and labeled all my images although by now most reside on my computer. I have other images showing the flooded river, but to find them may be a task I don't have time for currently. If I ever do find them, I'll try to remember to tag you.

I gather the floods never bother you in your apartment? You seem to be pretty high up. That really is a wide river and it makes a great view for you. We don't have a river near us.

That was beautifully written and very interesting. There are no rivers near my main home, just a pond and streams with a waterfall. However, we are just feet from the Intracostal at our winter home in Florida. We can see the ocean on the other side of a narrow strip of land.

We live about 1/2 hour drive from a small river called the Battle River. We are in a dry area of the province.

Why Battle? Are their places for people to walk along the river front?

@responsiveme Good question. I do not know the history. Yes there are places where one can walk, but most of it is just winding through the farmland. I like to paddle my kayak on the river.

All men are bad, whether they are born to brahma or dhritarashtra..they are all destructive...kidding...river is a river...pity we have not decided to link rivers as yet...we in south are not receiving any rainfall...August has been as dry as May...very sad about the elephant...I like them..I know how these people treat them in captivity...I am feeling sad. Our rivers dried ages ago...partly because rain gods are annoyed, and partly because of builders.

@responsiveme ... The reason is land is expensive! But hey, I have a solution...at least give me a hearing!!! The land acquisition act proposition is bunkus (that is hostel slang) meaning garbage. What I have in mind will prevent land sharks!

wow, that river 'tis huge! how sad that so many lose their lives to the floodin' :( i'm most certain 'tis a site 'f beauty to behold from high 'bove off yer balcony, i'd surely not wish to live 'long 'ts banks though. hmm, nearest river to these parts? prolly red river? though there's no such waters that flow through my lil neck'f the woods. we've natural playas that fill when the rains come, which sadly folks're fillin' with dirt so's they can 'use their land'. the closest big body 'f water i reckon'd be'n ft. sumner?? 'bout 65 miles from here.

@responsiveme 's this river changed much o'er the past 100 years 'r so?? i know that many here'n the u.s. seem to've been doin' such - sometimes branchin' off where there'd not been prior 'n such. yepperz, sounds like the bosque here'n new mexico. many rely'n that source 'f water.

Yes, its beautiful but dangerous too. It runs throughout the state dividing it into the north and south banks.of course thats why the land is so fertile and it is an agricultural economy.

The closest river from me is about 65 miles away and we have crossed the bridge a couple times when visiting the state on the other side, but I never seen it flooded. Here, we have creeks that run through and where in the 1960s they created a man made lake and I live on that lake. The lake has a good dam with a spillway, so I don't see it flood either, but I do see some of the creeks that flood over the roads sometimes. That is a beautiful picture, but I'm sure it can be scary during the rainy season.
