Now-a-days there is a visible increasing inclination towards food supplements when there is so many nutritious fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses etc. available in abundance in the market.Does food supplements really have the desired potential nutrition to replace our age old balanced diet with world of goodness...i wonder !!

Food supplements are not going to make you full after taking them like eating the right type of foods would.

I prefer eating the food and drinking the juices, myself. I do take extra vitamin D because all summer I'm hiding in the air conditioner. I really think the only reason to supplement is if you have a special need, if you know you are lacking in some nutrient for whatever reason.

@arintellect007 So long as we could take the necessary natural food, taking supplements is not a good idea.Of course when a person has some problem to properly digest fruits, vegetables, cereals etc, taking supplements is a remedy.

I am wondering too, because they are already processed and have some chemicals in it compared to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Still there are people who prefer them to their fresh counterparts.

I really think that it is good to take them if we do not eat very well. I think most of us cannot eat as much variety in a day as we need to so taking a muti-vitamin at least is excellent for us.

Food supplement is still needed even if you are eating a lot of nutritious fruits and vegetables. The problem is not that you are not eating well, but that your body is not absorbing certain trace mineral well enough. Most people have problem with trace element, as in zinc and other mineral that hardly exists in food. Even if you eat food with such minerals, your body may not absorb it. The older we are, our body has more problem with getting the nutrients from food. That is why food supplement is needed.

If I had my choice, I would prefer to get everything I need from foods. But, at my age I have to take calcium and vitamin D to keep my bones from becoming brittle and to avoid a break.

Best to take healthy food but people take the short cut way. Don't you think so?

I really don't think we need supplements unless we're on a really restrictive diet. The only times I have taken supplements has been after an illness.
