Wrong Station, Right Line

Bakerloo signs

At Embankment Tube Station, there is a typo that has been around for years and, can be, rather misleading. In the passageway to the Bakerloo Line the route map shows a stop at Willesden Green (8th from the top). The right half of the picture shows the map at Charing Cross Station and correctly labels the stop as Willesden Junction. To be fair, the Bakerloo did stop at Willesden Green, until 1979, but then continued onto Stanmore - a service now provided by the Jubilee Line. So, this is not an old map forgotten about. I am guessing whoever designed this one just remember the old station, the names being so similar. Not a problem if you are a regular on the Tube, and for visitors it just adds to the excitement of travelling on the Underground!

I hate being a tourist in areas like this where the locals all know what's happening but nobody else does. :)

anxiety producing if you can't communicate with them

@hereandthere That's true. We tried to follow directions out of a car park in Tipperary once in Ireland but what we needed to do was go out the exit that said 'No Exit'. All the local shoppers were going that way. Later we were told 'nobody takes any notice of that' but of course we felt we had to.

@JudyEv So very handy when everyone else knows which sign to ignore!

I agree with @MALUSE, excitement, but not amusement. It's hard enough to find your way through the Tube, surely misleading names do not help.

Must be in the British makeup, we do seem to enjoy this kind of thing!

@Ronrybs It's not only a British problem. In Italy many times it's better not to read the signs if you want to reach destination.

@LadyDuck I've never used public transport in Italy, now I am not sure I want to try!

I think most people have already worked out which line they want and don't study these line maps

@Ronrybs on my travels to the capital I just look at the quickest route from where I am to where I want to be - the only stations that matter are the connections and final destinations and the stops immediately before them as you know yours is next as you pass those and that it's time to get up and reach towards the doors

I used to be a shift worker in London and I've travelled at all hours of the late night and very early morning. All you need is a good book and a walkman, it was pretty dull

I'll bet there are other such typos on the network... as well as fictitious stops on certain lines, like Vauxhall Bridge (used in one of the James Bond movies, I think!). This is as well as stations so close physically that it is better to leave one station and walk to another than it is to actually change and travel from one to the other (can't remember which two in Central London fall into this category... I have never had to travel the network long enough to develop the knowledge...

Ah, Vauxhall bridge. In the film that is on the Piccadilly Line if I remember right. The Picc doesn't go south of the river. I know what you mean about distances between stations, there are a few where a little walk is much easier

Excitement, but not amusement! The good thing for tourists is that they don't have to take the tube during rush hours. I can't or rather don't want to imagine being a commuter in London.
