I Must Be Doing Something Right

The ideas are jumping into my head. I’m smart enough to realize that I have to take advantage of this whenever it happens. I write them down. I don’t need to record massive paragraphs, just a short phrase or list so I won’t forget the brainstorm. You see, it’s 1:37 in the morning. I was in bed by 10:30, but I keep getting up to write things down. The biggest idea that came to me tonight was a solution to a dilemma that has been bugging me for weeks. How do I speak about a book that has not yet been printed? What’s the upside? I need to do this in order to build my “following” and to prove to publishers there’s an interest in the subject. If I don’t, they won’t even consider publishing my book. So here’s the plan. I go to a group that is in my target market (parents and grandparents of school aged children). I begin telling them about myself and my book. Then I ask them to give me their names and email addresses on a card that reads: “I would like to see More Free Cash for College by Elizabeth Wallace published”. I’ll only use their email address once, to let them know the book is in print. Otherwise, it’s just a list to prove there’s interest in the book. Then I teach them three of the tips from my book. This is a giveaway. It cost them nothing but their names and email addresses on a postcard. This should build interest and my list. I even know where to start. Several people in my writer’s group have asked me to speak at their children’s schools. The next place I have in mind is the local Saddleback Church which has over 20,000 people attending services each week. Any more ideas of groups who would be interested in learning how their children can earn more free cash for college?

I mention the name of David Ramsey before and his show, he often talks about not spending too much money for university and try to get some scholarships. He might be one to check.

The church holds seminars and workshops for their people. They teach all sorts of things to them. I'm sure they would like to know how to send their children to college without student loans.

Yes while you have the ideas in your head get them out there before you forget them. I've done this a lot of times.

I get like that a lot of times I will be in the middle of something or trying to go to sleep and all of a sudden the thoughts and ideas start flooding in. I try and keep a notebook nearby so that way if that happens I can jot them down so I don't forget. Those sounds like a good start, good luck.

I have a pack of 3x5 cards and a pen in my nightstand. It usually helps me fall back asleep, but the last week or so, it hasn't turned off my head. Bummer.

@ElizabethWallace I like the haircut in your avatar but I'm not a young person

Thanks. Now I have to figure out a hairstyle that will make younger people listen to me. I've let it grow some, and people like it, but they're my age. Sigh.

@simone10 Thanks. I need input. I'm not the one to ask. That's the haircut I like too, but the people in salons start out fine, but then stop giving me the same cut. After paying $75 for the wrong haircut over and over, I became a little ticked off and haven't had it cut since. The curls are pretty, but I think the way it looks now makes me look my age. Not a good idea when marketing to people in their 30's.

perhaps homeschoolers, you are talking about a group that usually only has one income. Find local homeschool groups and see if you can talk with them. Their kids tend to go earlier to college.

@ElizabethWallace - I think that speaking to groups and showing you are an "expert" in your field is the best way to build a following. Then, your book will follow naturally. Good luck with your planning!

@ModernDayWriter You mean quotes from the book? There are no pictures in it. Not my style.
