Do You Listen to the Radio Very Much?

The only time I listen to the radio now is when I’m in the car. I don’t even HAVE a radio in the house. I’ve been meaning to purchase an emergency radio, that runs on batteries, but I haven’t done it yet. As a teenager, I used to go to sleep with the radio on beside my bed. And during the day, there were several radio programs that my family used to listen to. That was before we finally got a television set, in the late 50s. I remember my father told me a LONG TIME ago, that KDKA radio station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was the first commercial radio station in the world. My research shows that it began broadcasting on November 2nd, 1920. We lived 90 miles south of Pittsburgh, in West Virginia. Here’s a link if you want to know more about this pioneer radio station. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDKA_(AM)

Yes, music is everywhere now, available in so many different forms. The radio is "old-fashioned" I guess.

@MattMeng You think it looks like a clock? I guess it could, if it had numbers on it. Old time clocks probably do look like that. Now, everything is modern looking. Here's an antique clock I found on Pixabay

Not even in the car. I have one I use to boost the sound on my big screen, why everyone needs a big screen, in all the end of the world movies, people loot the stores for big screens no radio's. What I noticed on my booster sound radio was that on AM you used to move the dial and one voice would go over another but now it is ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

thinking @IreneVincent if the internet goes bonkers then everything else will too? I don't know if a lot of people will have radio but if some do it might be on short wave, cb or walky talky band and not sure normal am or fm would receive that?

@Bluedoll We used to have a CB radio, back in the 70s. We were really into it back then and then suddenly, it seems, it just faded out of use. My CB "handle"(name) was Alley Cat. Seems so long ago now.

I think that everyone, including myself, should have an emergency radio that runs on batteries, just in case the internet grid collapses. It can happen. I'm going to this NEW store that sells camping equipment and purchase one soon. The store is on the other end of town, so I will have to find a good day to go when I'm not in a hurry. I've been to the store once before and purchased some items for my go-bags, but I FORGOT to purchase a radio and I meant to.

As well as being fortunate enough to write for - and about - radio, and appear on some programmes, I still love listening to radio without it feeling like a 'busman's holiday', perhaps because I grew up listening to it. I'll sometimes spend a couple of hours late at night switching between music stations for nostalgic hits but I mainly listen to speech-based radio (except phone-ins, which I can't stand). I enjoy comedy shows, quizzes, documentaries and drama on BBC Radio 4 plus repeats of those on Radio 4 Extra. In the early hours I sometimes listen to the World Service.

@asfarasiknow To be honest, I really don't know how many programs like that are on the radio, but with all the thousands of radio stations broadcasting in the USA, I'm sure there are plenty of just about anything a person might want to find, on the radio. There are a lot of religious stations too. I mainly listen to music. I also have listened to interviews of famous persons, mainly in the music genre.

@IreneVincent Does your country have much of the type of speech-based radio I mentioned or is it mostly phone-ins or Howard Stern-type programmes?

We listen in the car and maybe for a short time before we go to sleep but it's nearly exclusively classical music.

Classical music is nice before going to bed. I have a CD with flute music from Peru and I love to listen to that. At the State Fair one year, this group from Peru performed live and I purchased their CD. It's very soothing.

@JudyEv It's really very beautiful music. I'm sure you could probably find some on YouTube. I'll take a look and see if I can find any.

@IreneVincent I can imagine the Peruvian music would be soothing. Their panpipe playing is pretty cool too.

Before people would always be glued to their radios . But now , they are more glued into watching TV . So , when you don't listen to the radio , you miss the important announcements like schedule of blackouts and the like . But during a typhoon , we are glued to the radio for the updates .

The only time I ever turn on the radio is when the tornado sirens go off. (Once, maybe twice a year.)

That's why I want to get an emergency radio. For tornados or some other emergency. We have a military facility nearby, and chemical plants and there are also hurricanes and tornados too.

Sounds like a good radio station. My brother lives in Dublin Georgia, south of Atlanta. I have flown in and out of Atlanta airport several times.

I listen to the radio in the car and I also listen to it a home in the morning when I am getting ready for work. I like listening to the morning show because they have a lot of call in games. I never call in but I do know people who have won some awesome prizes. When I was younger I would also sleep with the radio. I remember Dad bought us all one of those little transistor radios when we were young. That was the best gift ever. We loved those things. We could take music with us wherever we went.
